Timothée Chalamet's 'Wonka': Everything We Know So Far

The film will have several musical numbers and the 'Dune' actor is set to show off his singing and dancing skills.

Timothée Chalamet is on a roll. His latest epic science fiction film, Dune, has been making waves with the sequel set into motion. The 25-year-old actor is already set to work on several other projects as well. This includes the satirical sci-fi black comedy Adam McKay's Don't Look Up

Chalamet also has other projects down the pipeline, such as the much-anticipated prequel about the origins of the famous chocolatier, Willy Wonka. Chalamet's involvement in the film was reported earlier this year by Deadline. The actor shared the first look from the film decked out in a brown top hat and a burgundy coat. He is also expected to show off his singing and dancing skills in the film, which will have several musical numbers.

Here's everything you need to know about Chalamet's Wonka.

What Is The Plot Of Wonka?

The story is based on the character first introduced to us by Roald Dahl in his book, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, in 1964. The story has already been adapted to the big screen, with Wonka being previously played by Gene Wilder in 1971‎ and Johnny Depp in 2005. However, they played the grown-up version of the eccentric chocolatier. But Chalamet is going back to the origins of the iconic character. It follows his adventures preceding the opening of the world's most famous chocolate factory.

David Heyman, the producer of Wonka, has confirmed that it will indeed be a prequel. Speaking to Collider, Heyman, the man behind the Fantastic Beasts franchise, said, "We are still trying to figure out how to tell that story, what the story is. It's a prequel, it's not a sequel. What makes Willy—when we find him at the chocolate factory doing the golden ticket, where is he before that? What leads him to that place where he's locked himself away?... It's how does he get there? So we're playing around with that."

In the 2005 adaptation, there were glimpses of Willy's childhood as the son of a dentist who forbade him from eating chocolate, and when he did get a taste of it, he was so captivated by it, he decided to become a chocolatier.

Who Is The Cast Of Wonka?

So far, it has been confirmed that Chalamet is playing the titular role in the prequel. Other cast members that have been confirmed so far include Sally Hawkins, Rowan Atkinson, Olivia Colman, and Jim Carter. Additionally, Mathew Baynton, Tom Davis, Simon Farnaby, Rich Fulcher, Kobna Holdbrook-Smith, Paterson Joseph, Keegan-Michael Key, Calah Lane, Matt Lucas, Colin O'Brien, Natasha Rothwell, Rakhee Thakrar, and Ellie White will also be joining the ensemble. It is, however, unclear in what capacity they will be joining the film yet.

When Will Wonka Release?

The film is set to be released on March 17, 2023, by Warner Bros. Pictures.

Paul King is set to direct the film with a screenplay co-written by Simon Farnaby. Michael Siegel and Rosie Alison will be on as executive producers.

Does Wonka Have An Official Trailer?

The film is still in pre-production, as Chalamet is in rehearsals to prepare for the role. He has already started recording the music for the film, and speaking to TIME about playing Wonka he said, "It's not mining the darker emotions in life. It's a celebration of being off-center and of being O.K. with the weirder parts of you that don't quite fit in."
