War films rooted in reality have the ability to grip fans like no other genre. They portray the harrowing lives of soldiers, something so chaotic in an organized fashion. Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk and Mel Gibson's Hacksaw Ridge are forever etched in our hearts. Joining the list of these amazing works is the new aviation war film, Devotion which will be released by Sony Pictures Entertainment and Black Label Media this year. Here is everything we know about the new aviation war films.
The war films were originally set for a theatrical starting in a limited capacity on October 14, 2022, before expanding on October 28, 2022. However, plans have since changed, and Devotion will now be arriving in theaters on November 23, during the Thanksgiving weekend.
Based on the book, Devotion: An Epic Story Heroism, Friendship, and Sacrifice written by Adam Makos, the film centers around Ensign Jesse Bown, the Navy's first African-American carrier pilot, and his wingman, Lieutenant Thomas "Tom" Hudner. The two were famous war pilots for the US Navy during the Korean War. Belonging to different racial and economic backgrounds, the two meet when they joined the Strike Fighter Squadron 32 and commit to their service and deployment that led up to the Korean War. In those trying times, the friendship between Brown and Hudner strengthens. Here is the official logline from the film's website.
"Devotion, an aerial war epic based on the bestselling book of the same name, tells the harrowing true story of two elite US Navy fighter pilots during the Korean War. Their heroic sacrifices would ultimately make them the Navy's most celebrated wingmen."
The two protagonists are played by Jonathan Majors and Glen Powell. Other notable members of the cast include Christina Jackson, who will play Daisy Brow, Jesse's wife. Thomas Sadoski is set to play Richard Cevoli, and the singer Joe Jonas will be playing another pilot. Other fellow pilots, such as Bill Koenig, Bo Lavery, and Carol Mohring, will be portrayed by Daren Kagasoff, Spencer Neville, and Nick Hargrove, respectively. Serinda Swan is also involved to portray actress Elizabeth Taylor who incidentally, meets these pilots in the film. The film is directed by fresh talent, J.D Dillard, whose feature films like Sleight and Sweetheart have amassed good views. The screenplay is written by Jake Crane, and Jonathan A. Stewart, and cinematography for the film is done by Academy Award winner Erik Messerschmidt.
