This Is a Robbery: The World's Biggest Art Heist

What Is ‘This is a Robbery: The World’s Biggest Art Heist’ About?

On March 18, 1990, 13 works of art were stolen from the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston in the wee hours of the morning amid St. Patrick’s Day celebrations. The watchman said that two men pretending to be police officers responding to a disturbance call tied him up, and looted the museum for the next hour. The crime remains unsolved over 30 years later.

An estimated $500 million worth of artworks were stolen. Among the missing masterpieces were created by the likes of Rembrandt, Johannes Vermeer, Edgar Degas, and Édouard Manet.

No one has ever been arrested or tried in connection with the case. However, both the Italian mafia and the Irish mob got suspected of being involved. The mystery behind the heist has spawned numerous theories.

There is still a $10 million reward for people who could provide information leading to the paintings’ return, and the Netflix documentary is expected to bring bigger public interest to the case.

Speaking about the upcoming documentary, Jane Rosenthal, Producer and Tribeca Enterprises co-founder/CEO reveals it's going to be an "explosive true crime story."

“I’ve always been energized by new voices, especially when they come to a project with such a clear passion for the story they’re telling,” Rosenthal said via Deadline.

“From the beginning, Colin and Nick were driven to tell this story as it really happened – equal parts drama, explosive true crime story, and a madcap comedy of errors. The result is a massively entertaining series.”
