This article is about a recent series called 'The politician'. It includes all the details about the show's release date, cast, plot, and various other news.
The Politician is the latest baby of well-known producer Ryan Murphy, of whom many fans know from other renowned popular series such as Glee and American Our Story. Ian Brennan and Brad Falchuk serve as co-producers for the show. The show premiered to a pretty good reception on Netflix back on September 27, 2019.
The show’s story revolves around Payton Hobart (Ben Platt), a wealthy, highly ambitious and tireless student running for student body president at the fictional Saint Sebastian High School in Santa Barbara, California. Standing in the opposite corner is Hobart's rival, the athletic and popular River Berkeley.
Hobart had dreamt that he would one day be the President of the United States, but before he can do that, he needs to be a student body president of his school so he can then transfer over to Harvard so that his dreams come true after that. But Hobart will have to do so by not only outsmarting his campaigning rival River but do so without forgoing his own morality and for that matter, his overall spotless public image.
Before we move forward, we like to warn you that from this point forward, you’ll be getting nothing but massive spoilers ahead, if you haven’t already binged the show and caught up with everything that has transpired.
Yes! The show has been officially renewed by Netflix. The news came from main cast member Ben Platt who provided an update on the new season from his official Twitter account back on November 5, 2019.
Even more pictures of season two’s filming were posted as shown below:
This renewal story is quite intriguing especially when it comes to Netflix Originals where people would usually have to wait two or three months before the company decides to make such announcements. It appears The Politician has received special treatment from the higher-ups of Netflix which does make sense when we look at how the story ended and the offers that the show's been getting.
The Politician, unlike Murphy's other popular series Glee, wraps up its high school storyline in just one season. In this season, Payton had known that Infinity Jackson (Zoe Deutch) was trying to be poisoned by her Nana (Jessica Lange). After outing himself, he had no other choice but to resign as the school's president as well as have his Harvard admission offer declined.
Later, we find that in the finale, Payton had enrolled himself in the backup school of NYU. But things have gone significantly south as Payton is seen heavily drinking and wasting time performing Billy Joel at Marie's Crisis.
As Ben Platt told Deadline, "The show…has jumped forward a few years, so we’re all playing a lot closer to our own ages. As someone who’s continually back in high school, it’s a very nice change of pace. It’s a little bit more adult, I think, in tone, and there’s a bit more of an East Coast shadow over the whole thing, which I love."
And it seems Platt's words on the next season may hold true given the finale that we were given when his character Payton becomes an alcoholic after enrolling himself in NYU. At present Platt’s character tries to get through as a student during the day before drowning his sorrows by performing sad songs at dive bars during the night. Meanwhile, McAfee fills in as a campaigner for a current senator who puts no effort into their campaigns.
On the other side, there's Dede Standish who, alongside her campaign advisor Hadassah Gold, has one several reelections over the years. However, she does have a certain secret that Payton is attempting to exploit to ruin her reelection chances, and that is that she is in a three-way marriage.
Unbeknownst to the main character however, the senator is already gunning for the position of vice president thanks to a popular and handsome young Texan candidate. So it's clear as day that fighting dirty is not beneath her.
Going by the response we got from showrunner Ryan Murphy, we can expect the new season of The Politician to hit the globally renowned streaming platform Netflix by the summer of 2020. According to his recent interview, Ryan Murphy said that he was expecting a July 2020 release date for The Politician's second season. If that's the case going forward, then we can expect the series to have an annual release schedule. Although knowing how quickly Ryan and his crew got into filming for the second season, we can also expect the series to drop sooner than the projected date of arrival.
Sadly, since the second series recently went to filming, not even accounting production, we won’t be expecting a teaser for the next season, much less even a trailer for some time before July 2020. But will be sure to keep you posted once something comes up.
