Plot Leaks and rumors about The Matrix 4 becoming an openly trans movie grew stronger following co-directors' confirmation that the sci-fi trilogy is in fact a trans allegory.
Rumors have circulated online that the Matrix 4 will be a trans movie.
The rumors became even stronger after the Matrix co-director Lilly Wachowski has confirmed that the "original intention" of the iconic sci-fi movie was to be a transgender story.
Wachowski recently appeared in Netflix documentary Disclosure which traces the history of trans representation in media across the generations.
In the documentary, Wachowski said: "being out and trans forces people to look back on my work and apply a trans narrative to it."
People in the trans community have theorized that the Matrix is an allegory to a trans experience.
Wachowski finally confirmed the theory in a separate Netflix interview released this week.
When asked what she thinks of fans discussing The Matrix Trans Allegory, the out and proud trans director said: "I'm glad that it has gotten out, that was the original intention, but the corporate world wasn't ready for it."
"When you make movies and it's this public art form, I think [with] any kind of art that you put out into the universe there's a letting-go process because it's entering into public dialogue.
I like that, that there's an evolution process that we as human beings engage in art in a non-linear way, that we can always talk about something in new ways and in new light."
Wachowski added that the whole concept of the Matrix "was all about this desire for transformation, but it was all coming from a closeted point of view."
She also talked about how Switch (played by Belinda McClory) was meant to be someone who appeared as a man "in the real world" and then "a woman in the Matrix."
Lilly Wachowski's sister Lana, who is also a transgender, will be writing and directing The Matrix 4.
With the world now more open and supportive of the LGBTQ community compared to the '90s, people are thinking that the Wachowski sisters will no longer have to hide trans stories in allegory.
They're expecting an entirely different story for the fourth installment of the iconic sci-fi flick, perhaps, with an openly trans character playing an important part in the film.
Of course, all of these are mere speculations and nothing has been confirmed yet.
The Matrix 4 has an initial release date of April 1, 2022. It stars Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, Jada Pinkett Smith, and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II.
The film is reportedly slowly getting back on track after a hiatus due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Last month, Keanu Reeves and other cast members were spotted on The Matrix 4 filming set in Berlin.
There's no way of telling how much damage the temporary shutdown has done to The Matrix 4 production. However, it looks the team is still on track for the April 2022 release as they haven't announced delays on the release dates yet.
