A new Netflix original is set to start streaming in January! An Italian drama The Lying Life of Adults is based on the book of the same name penned by author Elena Ferrante. Netflix and Fandango are joining forces to develop the story that will be the second adaptation of Ferrante's work, the first one being The Lost Daughter starring Olivia Colman. Among the other directors for The Lying Life of Adults is an Italian filmmaker and director Edoardo de Angelis who has bagged many awards in Italy. Here's everything we know about the upcoming series The Lying Life of Adults.
Netflix has revealed the launch date of the show recently with a poster and teaser art based on the "My Brilliant Friend" author's latest novel. The show will debut on Netflix globally on January 4, 2023.
Here is the official synopsis of Elena Ferrante's The Lying Life of Adults:
Giovanna’s pretty face is changing, turning ugly, at least so her father thinks. Giovanna, he says, looks more like her Aunt Vittoria every day. But can it be true? Is she really changing? Is she turning into her Aunt Vittoria, a woman she hardly knows but whom her mother and father clearly despise? Surely there is a mirror somewhere in which she can see herself as she truly is.
Giovanna is searching for her reflection in two kindred cities that fear and detest one another: Naples of the heights, which assumes a mask of refinement, and Naples of the depths, a place of excess and vulgarity. She moves from one to the other in search of the truth, but neither city seems to offer answers or escape.
As the synopsis suggests the story follows the life of Giovanna as she transitions from childhood to adolescence in 1990s Naples and experiences both high and low-class living in the city. The logline of the trailer reads, "The search for a new face, after the happy one of childhood, oscillates between two consanguineous Naples which, however, fear and hate each other: the Naples above, which has given itself a fine mask, and the one below, which pretends to be excessive, trivial. Giovanna oscillates between high and low, now tumbling, now climbing, bewildered by the fact that, up or down, the city seems without answer and without escape."
As mentioned before the show is directed by Edoardo De Angelis with Giordana Marengo playing Giovanna. According to Netflix, Ferrante writes alongside Laura Paolucci, Francesco Piccolo, and De Angelis. The main cast of the series includes Valeria Golino as Vittoria, Alessandro Preziosi as Andrea, Pina Turco as Nella, and Luigi Chiocca as Uomo Officina. Other cast member includes Adriano Pantaleo as Rosario, Giuseppe Brunetti as Corrado, Azzurra Mennella, and Rossella Gamba among other recurring cast members whose details will be revealed soon.
