Jean-Claude Van Damme rescues estranged son and teams up with reckless teens in this upcoming Netflix action-comedy film.
Get ready to "kick, punch, flip, dance, jab and split" as Netflix's action comedy film starring Jean-Claude Van Damme arrives this July.
'The Last Mercenary' stars Van Damme as the world's most celebrated mercenary, who gets out of hiding to rescue his estranged son. Set in France, the movie also includes an impressive line-up of European cast.
'The Last Mercenary' embodies the classic Van Damme movie stunts we love, including his iconic split and action-packed fighting sequences. It's set to be one of the biggest action releases on Netflix this year.
Let us find out everything there is to know about the film, including plot, cast, release date, and so much more.
Jean-Claude Van Damme's 'The Last Mercenary' is coming to Netflix on July 30, 2021.
Filming for the project reportedly started in late July last year in France.
The film is directed by David Charhon, who also co-wrote the script along with Ismael Sy Savane. David Charhon also served as a producer, together with Jean-Charles Levy and Nicolas Manuel (Forecast Pictures); Olivier Albou and Laurence Schonberg (Other Angle Pictures) Jakéma Charhon and Eponine Maillet (Mony Films); and Olias Barco, Vlad Riashyn (Apple Tree).
“I want to return to the great tradition of action films of the ’80s and ’90s — those cult films we all love where the heroes were out of the ordinary, the stunts were all more impressive and truer than life, and all punctuated with humor. Only Jean-Claude could embody this unparalleled golden age of cinema," writer David Charhon said in a statement via Variety.
Jean-Claude Van Damme plays Richard Brumère / The Mist --a former French secret service special agent turned mercenary who returns quickly to France after knowing that his estranged son Archibald (played by Samir Decazza) is in trouble.
Archibald gets entangled in a messy situation following a mistake by an overzealous bureaucrat (Ivanov) and a mafia operation. He gets wrongfully accused of arms and drug trafficking, and now it is up to his long-lost father to rescue and protect him against danger. To do this, the former secret service agent must reach out to his old contacts and band together with a group of reckless youngsters.
“The Last Mercenary is an incredibly exciting project and allows me to take on a new genre." Van Damme said in a statement.
"I’ve always been a fan of Jean-Paul Belmondo, and I hope to take up the torch of action comedy in my own way. David Charhon’s script brings all these elements together in a very successful way – a beautiful story with emotion, a lot of action, and a lot of humor. I’m also very happy to work alongside a new generation of talent such as Alban Ivanov, Assa Sylla, and Samir Decazza, but also to be reunited on-screen with the creme de la creme of French actors such as Patrick Timsit, Eric Judor, Miou-Miou, and Valérie Kaprisky," he added.
As mentioned, Jean-Claude Van Damme takes the lead role and stars as Richard Brumère AKA The Mist, the former secret service agent turned mercenary who will rescue his son Archibald, played by Samir Decazza.
Alban Ivanov (“Lucky”) and Assa Sylla (“Mortel”) are also starring in the action-comedy film.
There are also several European talents who you may haven't seen in a lot of Hollywood films yet. For example, French comedian Eric Judor will be appearing in the film. Judor is part of the popular French duo Eric and Ramzy.
French actress and César Award for Best Actress winner Miou-Miou will also be appearing on the film, as well as veteran French actor and director Michel Cremades.
