Fuqua shared that delving more into the character's mysterious past will be 'key' to the new film.
The first plot details for the upcoming third installment of The Equalizer are now finally out, thanks to returning director Antoine Fuqua. In a recent interview with SlashFilm, the filmmaker revealed what he has in store for franchise star Denzel Washington's character, Robert McCall, and where the highly-anticipated sequel will take the action hero. When asked what he hopes to reveal about McCall in The Equalizer 3, Fuqua shared that delving more into the character's mysterious past will be "key" to the new film.
"Hopefully, reveal a little more about Robert. Yeah, I think that's the key, to learn more about Robert McCall," he said. Fuqua also hinted that The Equalizer 3 will see the former Marine take his unique brand of vigilante and violent justice to foreign lands. "We're shooting it in Italy, so that'd be fun. We're going to scout now. Sardinia, probably show up somewhere up the Amalfi Coast. Also, trying to find some small villages, seaside villages, things like that, and then we'll be in Sicily and Naples," the director revealed. According to MovieWeb, taking McCall and his particular set of skills to Europe has been a longtime dream of Fuqua's.

While the previous two installments in the franchise largely took place in Boston—with brief side quests to Europe—Fuqua told Collider in 2018 that he had his sight set on a very different horizon. "In my mind, there's a European adventure, absolutely. In my mind, that's what I'd like, to see him in Europe, in the future. God willing," he said. Loosely based on the 1980s TV show of the same name, The Equalizer received mixed reviews when it came out in 2014, grossing more than $192 million worldwide.
It followed Academy Award winner and Hollywood icon Denzel Washington as McCall, a man of mysterious origin who was grappling to lead a normal life while he ran from the terrible actions from his past. He is dragged back into deploying his talents to protect a teenage prostitute, Teri—played by Chloe Grace Moretz—when he takes on the Russian mafia to protect the girl. Based on everything we know about The Equalizer 3 so far, it seems as though the project will prove to be yet another hit with the franchise's fans as it might finally lift the veil off McCall's mysterious past.

The Equalizer 3 will also see Washington reunite with his Man on Fire co-star, Dakota Fanning. Speaking to The Beard and The Bald movie podcast about how this promising casting came to be, Fuqua said: "I think I was talking to Denzel, we were on the phone just talking about [The Equalizer 3] and Man on Fire came up, talking about [late director Tony Scott] and we had talked about [his] birthday was coming, I believe, and Dakota [Fanning] came up and I was, 'How old is Dakota now?' And we were like, 'Oh yeah, she's about the right age,' and I said, 'That would be cool to bring her back.' So, that's how it sort of happened and then I met with her and I loved her as soon as I walked in the room and met her. I mean, she's a great actress, but you meet people—she's just like... she's incredible."
