If we go back to the New York battle that happened in 'Avengers' in 2012. Since the Battle of New York has been featured in numerous Endgame set photos we can say that the superheroes will be revisiting the event through time travel or magic. According to Inverse, the latest plot synopsis of the film makes it look like Captain Marvel and Ant-Man will be the key to winning the battle with Thanos as they were not present during Infinity War.
“The answer may be in overwhelming power, thanks to Captain Marvel, or in the tiniest spaces between atoms accessible to Ant-Man. Avengers: Endgame will rewrite the Marvel Cinematic Universe as we know it. When it’s all over, nothing will be the same," reads the synopsis. Tony Stark had missed Thanos just a bit in "The Avengers". If the story is going to go back in time, then it's possible that Captain Marvel could fight Thanos one-on-one since she is the most powerful superhero.
The fans already know that the title 'Endgame' came from what Dr. Strange had said at the end of Infinity War, which was his dying words. But if you go all the way back to 'Avengers: Age Of Ultron'. Tony Stark talks about the Battle of New York saying, “A hostile alien army came charging through a hole in space. … That up there? That’s the endgame.”
In a conversation between Tony and Steve, it was noted by a Reddit user that they will end up dying together. The conversation went like this, "Tony: “How are you guys planning on beating that?”, Steve: “Together", to which Tony replies, “We’ll lose.” Making a heroic sacrifice is a better way to make a conclusion in the film. These characters have played major roles and have become iconic over the years and they deserve an epic end.
A fan theory from a Reddit user says that the heroes might use a portal to transfer into another universe where they may have to sacrifice their lives to save others. The Reddit user says, " some of the heroes must stay behind and fight the villain until everyone is safe.” Therefore, the “endgame” is a situation where “these heroes sacrifice themselves to save the new universe.”
The cast of the film is very secretive about giving out any details of the film. In an interview with Business Insider, the directors of the film, Anthony and Joe Russo spoke about ending films on a 'grim note'. "We knew it was risky but we've tried to make risky choices with all of our Marvel films. Part of the virtue with the fact that the brand is so popular and is doing so well is that you can push the audience because you have the audience, " said Anthony.
"It allows us as storytellers to push them a little harder than you could with a normal film that didn't have that kind of framing. We basically want to bring audiences what we want to see in a theater. We want a story that will give us the whole range of human experiences: will make us laugh, make us cry, make us think, and excite us, thrill us, scare us, and ultimately surprise us. And also give us something that we can live with after we've seen the movie and chew on for a while, " he added.
This could mean that the ending of Endgame can also be really heartbreaking for the fans to watch. They have a lot of expectations with the ending as it makes all the previous films worth the watch as they build up to this final end. "The thing that's nice about the Marvel universe is that its long-form storytelling. It's not predictive. You can challenge the audience, " said Joe.
"It's impossible to tell the stories we have been telling for the last few movies without the movies that predicated ours. The audience has that emotional investment so we can make radical choices in a market now driven by social-media conversations. A movie to a large extent has to drive that conversation or it's not going to be a successful film. Making disruptive choices with the narrative is a way we're driving that conversation, " he added. We will only know the fate of all the heroes once the film releases, t8ill then all we can do is patiently wait.
