It’s time for fans to look ahead into Marvel’s already confirmed Phase 4 films such as Doctor Strange 2, Black Panther 2, Guardians of the Galaxy 3 and lastly, The Eternals.
With Avengers: Endgame now in cinemas, it’s time for fans to look ahead into Marvel’s already confirmed Phase 4 films such as Doctor Strange 2, Black Panther 2, Guardians of the Galaxy 3 and lastly, The Eternals.
Given how Endgame concluded, it set up a great stage for the aforementioned films. And considering The Eternals, which hasn’t been namechecked previously in the MCU, is both new, unpredictable and exciting.
Development for the film adaptation of Jack Kirby’s The Eternals was announced back in April 2018 by Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige.
According to an interview with The Wrap, Feige said, “Eternals is one of many many many things that we are actively beginning to have creative discussions about to see if we believe in them enough to put them on a slate.”
The Hollywood Reporter announced in September 2018 that Marvel Studios had assigned Chinese director Chloé Zhao (known for The Rider and Songs My Brothers Taught Me) to direct the film.
Let’s delve deeper into the world of The Eternals and see what we can expect from the film.
In the universe of The Eternals, there were Celestials who had visited earth over 5 million years ago, including Nezarr the Calculator, who had been doing genetic experimenting on early humans going through the evolutionary process. From this, the Celestials created two races; the long-living Eternals and the horribly unstable and sadistic Deviants. Their powers were said to tap into the same cosmic power of the Infinity Stones.
As such, the Eternals are able to extend their own lifespan, not only making them invulnerable but also virtually immortal. And using their psionic powers, they can also bend matter at the molecular level to do just about anything they want.
For the time being, there is no set release date for The Eternals, but we might have the timeline figured out for when it’s expected to drop.
According to Comicbook.com, the production for The Eternals will start in Atlanta on August 1st. This update was reported from a new listing in Production Weekly. And if we’re betting people, we believe that filming will continue all the way till January 2020, which drives speculation that the film could be seeing a release in fall 2020.
Therefore, the most likely release date slot for The Eternals could be November 6, 2020, which Disney just so happens to have lined up for a Marvel movie.
In April 2018, The Wrap reported that numerous screenwriters had taken up meetings and were told to come up with a story that focuses on the female Eternal known as Sersi.
Sersi first appeared under a different name as Circe in Jack Kirby’s Strange Tales #109 in June 1963, where she was known as Circe the nymph or goddess of magic who appears in Homer’s Odyssey. Circe is similar to Marvel’s Thor, whom the humans worship as a god.
Sersi, unlike other pompous and boastful god characters, is shown to be benevolent as she cherishes living among human beings despite her tremendous power and invulnerability. She would later settle down in New York City where she would perform magical illusions to entertain the citizens and becomes a party planner.
By the time Zhao was announced to direct the new film back in September 2018, more details regarding the film had emerged saying that it was a “love story between Ikaris, a man fueled by cosmic energy, and Sersi, who relishes moving amongst humans.” And while her comments may sound interesting, it’s worth noting that this is just speculation or rumors being thrown around, so we should never expect anything solid out of those details and take it with a pinch of salt.
On March 27th, 2019, The Hollywood Reporter reported that Angelina Jolie was being considered for a role in the film. There’s speculation that she could be playing Sersi. Jolie is also set to reprise her role in the eponymous Maleficent 2.
Then on April 5th, 2019, THR said that Kumail Nanjiani was also being considered to join the film. Even since The Big Sick, Nanjiani’s stock has risen in the acting department and is set to star with fellow MCU regular Dave Bautista in the upcoming action-comedy Stuber.
And then most recently, The Wrap broke the news that former Game of Thrones actor Richard Madden (who also starred in The Bodyguard) was the latest to be in talks to join the seemingly star-studded cast in The Eternals. Madden has recently gotten massive buzz for The Bodyguard, which also helped him clinch the Golden Globe for Actor in a Drama TV Series. He’ll also be appearing in the upcoming Elton John musical biopic Rocketman, where he will be starring alongside Taron Egerton.
