Reportedly, when the show will drop its first episode, fans will see the storyline picking up two years after the events of the finale, where Tea Leoni's character will be answering to a different title, which fans never would have before: President of the United States. “We are doing about a two-year time jump,” Amy Reisenbach, CBS’ executive vice president of current affairs, said. “When we come back, Elizabeth will be president. It will be about 100 days into her presidency.”
According to series co-creators Barbara Hall and Lori McCreary, the new season will show the journey of Elizabeth's experience as a candidate in a political primary and presidential election. “We’ve always been about pulling back the curtain on the State Department and showing the process of diplomacy, so this is going to be pulling back the curtain on a campaign and everything that that involves,” Hall said.

According to TV Line, Sara Ramirez has bid goodbye as a regular actor for the CBS political drama's sixth installment. We can also see Grey's vet, who joined the show in season 4 as a spectacular political strategist Kat Sandoval, coming back as a guest appearance in any of the show's 10 episodes. Other cast members who are going to make a return are Tim Daly, who plays the role of Henry McCord, Elizabeth's husband, and Željko Ivanek as Russell Jackson, White House chief of staff. Other members who might be making their comeback for the sixth installment are Erich Bergen as Blake Moran, Elizabeth's personal assistant and policy advisor alongside Patina Miller as Daisy Grant, Elizabeth’s press coordinator.
