Here's The First Look At 'The Handmaid's Tale' Season 5, Release Date Also Announced

It looks like fans won't have to wait too long!

June is back! The Handmaid's Tale Season 5 has just been given a release date and Hulu also revealed the first look at the dystopian series based on Margaret Atwood's novel of the same name. Spoilers ahead!

We last saw June played to perfection by Elizabeth Moss getting revenge on the Waterfords. At the end of the season, she brokered a deal with Commander Lawrence (Bradley Whitford) for the release of 22 women of the resistance in exchange for Fred Waterford's (Joseph Fiennes) return to Gilead.

However, Fred ends up slipping into the murderous hands of June and her fellow handmaids with the help of Nick (Max Minghella). Fred is beaten to death and his headless corpse ends up hanging from the Wall. Quite symbolic, considering the previous seasons showed misbehaving handmaids being hung from the Wall.

The final scene of the season showed June's husband, Luke (O-T Fagbenle) finding his wife covered in blood, holding her daughter Nichole in her bedroom. Luke sinks to the floor as he realizes what has happened. "I know. I'm sorry," June says. "Just give me five minutes, okay? Just give me five minutes with her, then I'll go." Where does she go? Creator and showrunner Bruce Miller told The Hollywood Reporter, "That moment at the end is her as a mother knowing she had chosen something that makes her feel like she can never be a mother again. She’s holding that baby and she’s thinking to herself this way, as a mother, and then she thinks of herself that way in the woods with dead Fred, and then she thinks of herself as a mother again and that’s where she is. Those two things are pushing up against each other... You put those two things together when she believes, and I think we as the audience believe, that those two things can’t coexist."

According to EW,  Hulu just dropped a synopsis for the new season. "June faces consequences for killing Commander Waterford while struggling to redefine her identity and purpose," it reads. "The widowed Serena attempts to raise her profile in Toronto as Gilead's influence creeps into Canada. Commander Lawrence works with Aunt Lydia as he tries to reform Gilead and rise in power. June, Luke and Moira fight Gilead from a distance as they continue their mission to save and reunite with Hannah." Hulu also released the first look of the upcoming season with Moss staring up at the camera miserably. Another image includes Serena Waterford (Yvonne Strahovski), in mourning garb, with a subtle smirk possibly at her late husband Fred Waterford's funeral, perhaps.

The critically acclaimed series will return on Sept. 14 with two episodes and new episodes will stream Wednesdays on Hulu.
