With big names in the industry attached to the project, it is already a much-anticipated release next year.
Mattel's Barbie doll is coming to life and everyone is excited.
The live-action adaptation of the doll is nothing short of a challenge. Ever since the news about the possibility of a Barbie movie got out, especially with Margot Robbie producing it, people have been eagerly waiting to see it come to life. It is coming to life in the biggest way possible. With big names in the industry attached to the project, it is going to become a much-anticipated release next year.
While the project is still in the pre-production stage, here's everything we know about it so far:
Margot Robbie is set to play the malibu princess in the film being directed and written by Greta Gerwig. Gerwig gave us Lady Bird and Little Women, and now, together with Robbie, we are getting the first live-action film based on the doll. Joining Robbie is Emma Mackey who many have noted bears a striking resemblance to Robbie. Ryan Gosling has joined the film as Ken. Emmy-winning actors America Ferrera (Ugly Betty, Superstore) and Kate McKinnon of Saturday Night Live, are also joining the cast along with Marvel superhero Simu Liu (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings) in yet-to-be-revealed roles, reported Variety.

Will Farell is also joining the cast. He is rumored to be the CEO of a toy company. It has not been confirmed if this company is Mattel. Other actors joining the star-studded cast list in unknown roles include Hari Nef (And Just Like That), Alexandra Shipp (Tick, Tick … Boom!), Ariana Greenblatt (Stuck In Between), Issa Rae (Insecure), Michael Cera (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World), Kingsley Ben-Adir (The OA), Rhea Perlman (Matlida), Sharon Rooney (Dumbo), Scott Evans (Almost Love), Ana Cruz Kayne (Anya), Ritu Arya (The Umbrella Academy), and Jamie Demetriou (Fleabag).
The film was initially based on the Barbie toy line. Preparation for the film production began in April 2014 when Mattel teamed with Sony Pictures. The development of the film has gone through various hands before ending up with Gerwig, Robbie, and Warner Bros. Pictures. "It comes with a lot of baggage!" Robbie had told Vogue UK about the film. "And a lot of nostalgic connections. But with that come a lot of exciting ways to attack it. People generally hear 'Barbie' and think, 'I know what that movie is going to be,' and then they hear that Greta Gerwig is writing and directing it, and they’re like, 'Oh, well, maybe I don’t...'" Which is true. There is apparently going to be a meta aspect to the film.
As per Deadline, however, the film will tell the story of "a doll living in Barbieland is expelled for not being perfect enough, which sets off on an adventure in the real world."
The film is being produced by Robbie via her LuckyChap banner. LuckyChap’s Tom Ackerley, Mattel Films’ Robbie Brenner, and David Heyman (Paddington producer) are also producing.
The film is set to be released on July 21, 2023. This also happens to be the same day Christopher Nolan's highly-anticipated Oppenheimer is set to be released. Exhibitor Relations Co. is aptly calling this day Barbie VS The Bomb.
Warner Bros. Pictures tweeted the first-look photo of Robbie in a pink convertible, along with the release date of Barbie that will be hitting theatres.
