It is set to be a prequel set two hundred years before the events of 'Game of Thrones.'
The HBO series, Game of Thrones, came to an end in 2019. Even though fans had mixed reactions to the show finale, it was one of the biggest and most-watched series of all time. It was only a matter of time before a Game of Thrones spin-off series that fans would definitely look forward to. A few months after the series finale, a prequel to the show, House of the Dragon was announced. It will be based on Martin's 2018 novel Fire & Blood and is set two hundred years before the events of Game of Thrones.
The series has already finished production and is set for release. Here's everything you need to know about the series:
The story is set during the era when Aegon the Conqueror, the first of three centuries of Targaryen rulers, united six of the seven kingdoms of Westeros. It will focus mainly on the first Targaryen civil war, better known as “The Dance of the Dragons” which was a turbulent period for House Targaryen that set sibling against sibling and dragon against dragon. It was during this war that dragons went extinct until we see them again in the first season of Game of Thrones. The plot will still revolve around the central theme of who should be allowed to rule the Iron Throne.
The star-studded cast includes Emma D’Arcy as Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, Matt Smith as Prince Daemon Targaryen, Paddy Considine as King Viserys I Targaryen, Olivia Cooke as Lady Alicent Hightower, Steve Toussaint as Lord Corlys Velaryon, Eve Best as Princess Rhaenys Velaryon, Fabien Frankel as Ser Criston Cole, Sonoya Mizuno as Mysaria, and Rhys Ifans as Ser Otto Hightower.
Additionally, Milly Alcock, Bethany Antonia, Phoebe Campbell, Emily Carey, Harry Collett, Ryan Corr, Tom Glynn-Carney, Jefferson Hall, David Horovitch, Wil Johnson, John Macmillan, Graham McTavish, Ewan Mitchell, Theo Nate, Matthew Needham, Bill Paterson, Phia Saban, Gavin Spokes, and Savannah Steyn will also be recurring cast members in the series. Martin and Ryan Condal are the co-creators of the series with Miguel Sapochnik and Condal as showrunners. Clare Kilner and Geeta Vasant Patel have served as directors for the series.
The show began production as early as 2020 but saw delays due to the pandemic. Last year, there was a delay in the production of the series after someone on set tested positive, temporarily halting production. It was resumed almost immediately after the individual who tested positive has been forced to go into isolation and the production has continued without said individual.
The production concluded in February this year.
House of the Dragon is scheduled to premiere on August 21, 2022.
