Emma Stone's 'Cruella': Everything We Know So Far

Disney dropped the trailer of Cruella this week and it'll be the backstory to one of its iconic villains of all time —  Cruella de Vil. The trailer has been generating a lot of buzz. Emma Stone will play the titular role and the trailer looks gorgeous. The movie has been scheduled for release in May 2021 but it remains to be seen if it'll be released in theatres or will hit the streaming service — Disney+ — directly. We might have to wait a few more months for the movie's premiere but here's what we know so far about the movie.

1. Emma Stone stars as Cruella de Vil and the trailer with her in character is giving us the chills. 

2. Cruella is a prequel film in the 101 Dalmatians franchise.

3. Cruella will serve as the origin story for the villain.

4. The first look of Emma Stone as Cruella was released by Disney in 2019 during the D23 Expo in Anaheim, California.

5. Emma Stone has revealed the movie is set in the '70s and will have "punk rock" vibes.

6. The movie will be helmed by Craig Gillespie, director of I, Tonya.

7. Disney's 101 Dalmatians franchise, including Cruella, is inspired by a 1956 novel penned by Dodie Smith.

8. The book was originally titled The Great Dog Robbery.

9. Emma Thompson will play Cruella's arch-nemesis, the Baroness.

10. Mark Strong, who starred in 1917, and Paul Walter Hauser, who starred in Cobra Kai, will play Cruella's henchmen, Boris and Horace.

11. Glenn Close, who played Cruella de Vil back in 1996's 101 Dalmatians and the 2000 sequel 102 Dalmatians, is an executive producer on Cruella.

12. Cruella was filmed on location in London, England.

13. The screenplay is penned by Dana Fox (How to Be Single) and Tony McNamara (The Great Writer).

14. McNamara worked with Emma Stone previously on 2018's The Favourite.

15. Emily Beecham (Hail Caesar) will play Anita, one of Cruella's friends who later goes on to own Dalmatians of her own.
