'Barry' Season 3: Everything We Know So Far

HBO's 'Barry' finally picks up production after a long hiatus. Expect both funny and tragic scenes for the new season.

'Barry' ended in a huge cliffhanger in season 2, and we have been waiting for the next season for about two years now.

The highly-acclaimed dark comedy series premiered on HBO on March 25, 2018.

It follows Barry Berkman, a former Marine turned hitman, who travels to Los Angeles to kill a target. He finds himself in the company of hopeful actors and actresses who are trying to break out in the L.A. theater scene.

The accepting community has warmed Barry's cold-hearted nature. He soon wanted to put his past behind to become a full-time performer. However, running away from the past is no easy task, and by the end of season 2, we saw Barry seemingly slip back into the same guy we dreaded in season 1.

Here's everything we know about 'Barry' season 3.

Is 'Barry' Renewed For Season 3?

Renewal Status: Renewed

Great news, everyone! 'Barry' is officially coming back for a third season. There is no need to fret over the last season's cliffhanger because the story will recapitulate for another season. The third season was announced in April 2019, even before season 2 finished airing in May that year.

When Will 'Barry' Season 3 Release?

It's been two years since we received the news of the renewal of the show. Unfortunately, things have not been particularly smooth for the third season. The show was in pre-production when the Coronavirus pandemic hit and forced them to shut down.

In April 2020, Henry Winkler told PeopleTV that they were already set for their second table read when they were told about the delay. They were hoping to resume in the late summer of 2020, which, sadly, didn't happen.

In January 2021, Bill Hader told Seth Meyers that even though they haven't started production for the new season yet, he has already written seasons 3 and 4 as well! This gave fans hope that we will be seeing more of 'Barry' in the future.

"Season 3 is completely written and ready to go, and during this time we actually went and wrote Season 4, so we have both of those kind of done," Hader said. "We’re just waiting until we can start shooting again."

Finally, in February 2021, HBO chief Casey Bloys told Deadline that shooting for season 3 has finally commenced. She also said that season 4 renewal is also likely to happen.

What Is The Plot Of 'Barry' Season 3?

The upcoming season is going to be a dark ride, that's for sure. Season 2 ended on a low note, revealing Barry's true nature. His killer instincts are still intact. He cold-bloodedly murdered a monastery full of gangsters out of rage at his handler Fuches. He allowed his acting mentor Gene Cousineau to get arrested for the murder of Cousineau's girlfriend, which Barry actually committed.

In the final moment for season 2, we saw Cousineau slowly realizing that Barry is indeed a callous killer. He can only say, "Oh my god," as the credits roll.

Cousineau has treated Barry like his own son, helping him come to terms with his brutal past throughout the seasons.

The third season will explore a different dynamic between Barry and Cousineau. Now that he is already aware of Barry's true identity, he will never be able to look at him the same way. The two will probably have a face-off in the new season.\Speaking about the upcoming season, Hader said that it will have both funny and tragic stuff.

“So much of it is following wherever the emotion takes you and being true and honest to the characters. In doing that, you get funny stuff, and you get really tragic stuff.” Hader said as per Variety.

Who Are In The Cast Of 'Barry' Season 3?

We are expecting the series regulars to reprise their roles for season 3.

Bill Hader will be back for the titular role, along with Henry Winkler as Gene Cousineau. Fuches (Stephen Root) and Noho Hank (Anthony Carrigan) survived Barry's attack. Hence, they are also likely to return for the new season.

Of course, Sally (Sarah Goldberg) is also expected to join the cast as Barry's girlfriend.

Is There An Official Trailer For 'Barry' Season 3?

There is no official trailer yet as of this writing. Shooting for season 3 has just begun in February, so the trailer might not be ready for at least a few months. Here is the season 2 trailer for now. We will update this article once the official trailer is released.
