Everything We Know About ‘Babylon’

With a 5-star cast, Damien Chazelle's next feature film is already shaping up to be memorable.

Damien Chazelle is gearing up to take us back to the founding moments of the film industry: the arrival of words in cinema, with his new movie Babylon.

After Damien Chazelle's La la Land, he is all set to return after 6 years to take us to a trip of the golden era of Hollywood when silent films transitioned to talkies. If early post-screening reports are to be believed, it's going to be one of the best films of the year — and might just work to remind us of the true potential American cinema boasts, beyond the comic book conveyor belt.

What is Babylon about?

The story is a dive into the cultural revolution of Hollywood when the cinema started to speak. Presented as a historical drama the movie presents about the evolution towards a more modern industry that was difficult in many ways for the actors and actresses (suppression of mimicry and exaggerated acting, diction work, difficult reception by the audience, etc.), who see their disappearance at the same time as that of silent cinema.

The story put light on reality mixed with imagination where some characters are entirely fictional, others will be inspired by real personalities such as Charlie Chaplin and John Gilbert, emblematic figures of the silent era, Clara Bow, the icon of the Roaring Twenties, or Anna May Wong. Rest, not much is known about the plot, but CinemaCon attendees got an early look at the yet-to-be-released trailer back in April.

Star-studded cast:

With an Oscar-winning filmmaker and a star-studded cast who can stop a film to be a success. But everything aside, the movie's cast includes, Margot Robbie who will play a Roaring Twenties Hollywood starlet, which early looks at the film’s CinemaCon footage suggested she’s playing a Clara Bow-type “It Girl.” Brad Pitt will portray a character based on leading man John Gilbert, otherwise known by the nickname “The Great Lover.”  Four years after Once Upon a Time... In Hollywood by Quentin Tarantino, these two cinematic counterparts can once again revive this age.

We will also find Tobey Maguire in the role of Charlie Chaplin, but also Olivia Wilde, Katherine Waterston, Li Jun Li, Max Minghella, Lukas Haas, Samara Weaving, Spike Jonze, Eric Robertsfont, and even Flea (famous bass player of the Californian rock band Red Hot Chili Peppers) in supporting roles.
