If you’re a fan of the show and want to be filled in on what’s to come with the upcoming season, we’ve scooped up just the right tidbits for you in this post.
Anne with an E is the latest adaptation of the classic children’s novel Anne of Green Gables by Golden-Globe and Emmy Award-winning writer and producer Moira Walley-Beckett. And it’s coming back for a third season on Netflix pretty soon. If you’re a fan of the show and want to be filled in on what’s to come with the upcoming season, we’ve scooped up just the right tidbits for you in this post.
It’s worth noting that the series isn’t exactly a Netflix Original series. Its parent network is actually CBC Television, which is for Canadian viewers, whereas Netflix is responsible for the show’s international distribution rights.
But enough about that, let’s get down to the show itself, when the third season is expected to drop and where the story takes us next.
It’s really hard to tell when the third season is going to drop given that production only started about two months ago, but we’re speculating that it could drop on Netflix sometime late summer 2019 or early fall 2019.
One of the biggest questions that we’re wrapping our heads around is whether Netflix is getting the third before CBC Television does or not again. Last we checked, season 2 came to Netflix in the summer of 2018 while CBC held its airdate back a bit and opted to have it premiere at fall, probably when viewing numbers were higher.
So far, Netflix hasn’t given anything away on its website other than a poster that confirms season 3 is on its way.
Most of the main cast members have been confirmed to return for Anne with an E’s season 3, including:
Amybeth McNulty as Anne Shirley
Geraldine James as Marilla Cuthbert
R. H. Thomson as Matthew Cuthbert
Dalila Bela as Diana Barry
Lucas Jade Zumann as Gilbert Blythe
Aymeric Jett Montaz as Jerry Baynard
Corrine Koslo as Rachel Lynde
Dalmar Abuzeid as Sebastian "Bash" Lacroix
Cory Grüter-Andrew as Cole Mackenzie
Cara Ricketts as Mary
Joanna Douglas as Miss Muriel Stacy
Kyla Matthews as Ruby Gillis
Miranda McKeon as Josie Pye
Directors Norma Bailey, Paul Fox, Amanda Tapping, and Anne Wheeler are set to return for season 3 along with composers Ari Posner and Amin Bhatia as well as writer and producer Jane Maggs.
The third season will introduce a brand new set of faces, including Kiawenti:io Tarbell and Brandon Oakes. Ka-kwet is a Mi'kmaq who also possesses quite the independent spirit and was commended by Moira herself for being lucky enough to have been found after an open casting call across Canada.
Business Times reports by saying:
“The young star will join other Indigenous “Anne With an E” adult actors like Dana Jeffrey and Brandon Oakes. But aside from an expanded cast, Anne With an E season 3 will also have an expanded storyline.”
*Spoilers for series up ahead*
As far as the show has taken us, it has been quite faithful to the early 20th-century novel series and is about to finish off the first book with the upcoming third season.
In the following season, we will witness a 16-year-old Anne becoming a woman and in doing so will come across a slew of new discoveries and develop further in her relationships with others. We’ll also watch as Anne learns a lot more about her birth parents as well.
The new season will also allow us to get a glimpse of its “Indigenous storyline” and characters (as we talked about earlier) when the citizens of Green Gables interacts with the people of the Mi’kmaq nation.
According to the renewal announcement of season 3 made by The Hollywood Reporter, it was said that the new season will not only introduce a band of new characters and stories but also have the characters deal with issues like feminism, gender parity, identity, and bullying.
There are even some theories at sites like Reddit which predict a huge death in the new season, with Ruby possibly meeting her imminent demise. It has been a constant thing with previous adaptations for having to leave out some of the novel’s more gruesome deaths.
Given that the show went into production a couple of weeks ago, we can only surmise that it might be in the middle of the third season.
The third season’s principal photography started out in March 2019. This was also the time when the new cast members and characters were announced for the show.
Moira Walley-Beckett posted the first episode of season 3’s draft on March 4th of her Instagram account.
Then on International Women’s Day, Moria Walley-Beckett posted on Instagram to announce the start of season 3’s production with her all-female production team.
The most recent update came in the mid of May 2019 when Moria said that it’s good to be back filming for the series after taking a couple of weeks’ break. She also shared a picture on the new season’s set.
If that’s not enough for you, then you’ll be happy to know that the ‘good’ people of Reddit had managed to snag a little glimpse of the new season.
