If a film does well after its release, you best believe there will be a sequel or two to come. There are many films that have done well over the past few years whose sequels have been in the works even during the uncertain times of the pandemic. Many of the projects have been delayed and are finally going to be released soon, some theatrically and others on streaming platforms. Whether or not they match up to the success of the initial film will have to be seen, but these are some upcoming sequels you can look forward to, going into 2022.

Spider-Man: No Way Home - December 17, 2021

Spider-Man's identity is now revealed. Finding it hard to keep his normal life as Peter Parker separate from that of being a superhero, he reaches out to Doctor Strange for help and to make everyone forget that he is Spider-Man. But then he learns the cost of doing this the hard way.



 

Sing 2 - December 22, 2021

The follow-up film of the successful 2016 animated anthropomorphic animal musical, Sing, is releasing later in December. Sing was about a struggling koala who owns a theater and decides to hold a singing competition to save his business. This then impacts the personal lives of its contestants.

In the second installment, Buster Moon and his all-star cast of performers prepare to launch their most dazzling stage extravaganza yet. There’s just one hitch: They first have to persuade the world’s most reclusive rock star—played by global music icon Bono, in his animated film debut—to join them.



 

Hotel Transylvania: Transformania - January 14, 2022

The fourth and final installment of the Hotel Transylvania series is set to release early next year. Drac and his monster gang will be going head-to-head with famous vampire slayer Van Helsing. The monsters are turned into humans with Helsing's new invention, and Johnny is turned into a monster. They must race against time to find a way to reverse this before it's too late.



 

Scream - January 14, 2022

This will be the fifth installment of the Scream film series about a new notorious killer with the Ghostface mask who begins targeting a group of teenagers to resurrect secrets from the town's deadly past after 25 years of the first murder spree.



 

Death on the Nile -  February 11, 2022

This is the follow-up film to 2017's Murder on the Orient Express based on the 1937 novel of the same name by Agatha Christie. Detective Hercule Poirot investigates the murder of a young heiress aboard a cruise ship on the Nile River.



 

Downton Abbey: A New Era - April 15, 2022

This sequel to the Downton Abbey film in 2019 based on the hit TV series of the same name will show the story of "the grandest escape of the year." 



 

Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore - April 15, 2022

The third installment of the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them series follows the adventures of Newt Scamander, the magizoologist who leads an intrepid team of wizards and witches to stop the evil Gellert Grindelwald.



 

Legally Blonde 3 - May 20, 2022

Elle Woods is coming back after 20 years. With a script from Mindy Kaling and Dan Goor, creator of Brooklyn Nine-Nine, the third film is set to be a hit. The plot is under wraps, but it is said to be "an entirely new fresh spin" from a previous version of the screenplay, as per DEADLINE.



 

Top Gun: Maverick - May 27, 2022

The long-awaited sequel to the 1986 hit film starring Tom Cruise is finally releasing next year. This will be the first of the two releases starring Cruise in 2022. It follows Pete "Maverick" Mitchell, who served as one of the Navy's top aviators and must soon confront the past while training a new squad of graduates for a dangerous mission that demands the ultimate sacrifice.



 

John Wick: Chapter 4 - May 27, 2022

In the fourth installment of the neo-noir action thriller film, Keanu Reeves will be reprising his role as the titular assassin and will be joined by Laurence Fishburne, Ian McShane, Lance Reddick, and Rina Sawayama. “John may survive all this shit, but at the end of it, there’s no happy ending. He’s got nowhere to go,” Chad Stahelski said of the character.



 

Minions: The Rise of Gru - July 1, 2022

This will be the sequel of the film Minions, which was itself a prequel of the Despicable Me series. It will be the fifth installment of the Despicable Me franchise following the untold story of 12-year-old Gru's dream to be named the greatest supervillain in the whole world.



 

Mission: Impossible 7 - September 30, 2022

This is the seventh installment of the action spy film starring Tom Cruise and the third in the series directed by McQuarrie, following Rogue Nation and Fallout. It will be released by Paramount Pictures, followed by a streaming release on Paramount+ in November 2022.



 

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Part 1 - October 7, 2022

The next installment of the Spider-Verse was announced with a short trailer setting the premise of the next film with an older Miles Morales who is now in college. We will be seeing a lot of familiar faces and meeting new ones in this sequel that is the first in a two-part series. 



 

Halloween Ends - October 14, 2022

Halloween Kills ended on a very ominous note. We know that we have not seen the last of Michael Myers, and in the final installment of the reboot series, we'll see how things turn out as Laurie takes on the serial killer.



 

Hocus Pocus 2 - October 2022

The plot synopsis of the much-awaited follow-up film reads: "Three young women accidentally bring the Sanderson Sisters back to modern-day Salem and must figure out how to stop the child-hungry witches from wreaking a new kind of havoc on the world."
