Sonic the Hedgehog film is based on the video game franchise of the same name by Sega. The first film was released in 2020, starring Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic along with James Marsden, Tika Sumpter, and Jim Carrey. At the time of its release, it became the sixth-highest-grossing film and is the highest-grossing video game film adaptation of all time in North America.

The sequel of the film was released on April 8, 2022. There were a lot of revelations made, and with an open-ended mid-credits scene, there was much potential for another film. Carrey may not be returning to the new film, but the third installment of the film was announced earlier this year in February, even before the second film was released. There will also be a Paramount+ series with Knuckles in the lead. Here's what you need to know about it: (Warning! Spoilers ahead.)

What Will The Plot Of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 Be?

As far as the third film is concerned, there is no official plot announced yet. But it will definitely pick up where the second film ended. In particular, where the mid-credits scene ends suggests what we will be dealing with in the next film. In the second film, Sonic and Knuckles come together to reclaim the Master Emerald from the clutches of Dr. Robotnik. We then have no idea where Robotnik is.

In the mid-credits scene, we see Robotnik's assistant, Stone, infiltrate the Guardian Units of Nations (GUN) building and pretend to clear up the mess when he overhears a conversation between Commander Walters, the leader of G.U.N., and one of his agents. The agent says that they were getting rid of any evidence of their relation to Robotnik and, in the process, find a secret file about a 50-year-old experiment. Walters recognizes it as Project: Shadow. At the same time, we see a black and red hedgehog who looks just like Sonic opens his eyes. This could be what we will get to see in the next film.

It's clear that the writers are trying to keep the plot details under wraps. However, in their recent conversation with Screen Rant, they shared that Sonic the Hedgehog 3 will be a "wild ride." Pat Casey and Josh Miller, the writers of the movie, told Screen Rant: "Sonic 3 is looking good. That's the one spoiler-iffic thing I'll say: "It's gonna be great. Look forward to it."

Meanwhile, Miller added: "Spoiler alert: It's gonna be crazy."

At the moment, it's the only spoiler available related to the plot.

Who Will Be In Sonic the Hedgehog 3?

There have been no official announcements regarding the cast of the threequel, but we can definitely make some guesses. Ben Schwartz will be back as Sonic and joined by Colleen O'Shaughnessey as Tails and Idris Elba as Knuckles. Carrey returning as the villainous Dr. Robotnik is still unclear since he has shared plans to retire from acting. But the producers have also shared that if he decides not to reprise his role as Robotnik, they will not recast it.

We can also expect to see James Marsden and Tika Sumpter back as Tom and Maddie Wachowski, Lee Majdoub as Agent Stone, and Adam Pally as Green Hills deputy sheriff Wade Whipple to return to the next film. We could also see Tom Butler back as Commander Walters, Natasha Rothwell as Rachel, and Shemar Moore as Randall.

When Will Sonic the Hedgehog 3 Be Released?

In August 2022, it was announced that Sonic the Hedgehog 3 would hit theatres on December 20, 2024. Unlike the previous two films, which were released during a different timeline (February 2020 and April 2022, respectively), the third part will be released during the Christmas holidays. Considering the popularity of the film franchise, a Christmas premiere sounds like a great choice. There has been no announcement regarding the production. However, with the film releasing in December 2024, we can expect it to roll into the process anytime soon.
