The second film was action-packed as well and there were some revelations made in the mid-credits scene.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2, the sequel to the 2020 film, was released theatrically on March 30. Based on the Sega video game of the same name, the first film did really well on its release, setting the record for the biggest opening weekend for a video game film in the United States and Canada.
The first film followed the blue hedgehog who can run at supersonic speeds and teams up with a town sheriff, Tom Wachowski (James Marsden), to stop the mad scientist Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey). A sequel was ordered for the film. In the second film, Sonic teams up to find Master Emerald before Dr. Robotnik and Knuckles (voiced by Idris Elba).
The second film was action-packed as well and there were some revelations made in the mid-credits scene. Here's what you need to know about what it means: (Warning, spoilers ahead!)
At the end of the first film, Sonic defeats Robotnik and gets adopted by Tom and his wife, Maddie. When the two of them are away to attend Maddie's sister's wedding, Sonic is attacked by Robotnik and his new accomplice Knuckles the Echidna. Knuckles wants to honor the legacy of his extinct tribe and wants to learn the location of the legendary Master Emerald, an ancient relic that allows its possessor to bend reality to their will. Robotnik offers to help Knuckles discover the relic with an ulterior motive. Sonic is rescued by Miles "Tails" Prower and the two decide to locate the Emerald as well.
Knuckles and Robotnik use a map belonging to Sonic's ancestor to locate a compass that leads them to the temple holding the Master Emerald. They manage to steal the compass in an avalanche. Sonic teleports to Maddie's sister's wedding where they are captured by the groom and family who happen to be members of the Guardian Units of Nations (GNU). Now Maddie and her sister, Rachel have to rescue Sonic, Tom, and Tails while Robotnik and Knuckles have located the temple already. Robotnik absorbs the Master Emerald and gains all its powers.
Knuckles joins forces with Sonic to rake down Robotnik. In the process, the Master Emerald shatters releasing the seven Chaos Emeralds. Sonic absorbs it and becomes Super Sonic defeats the robot before restoring the Emerald. He then goes back to normal. Now, Sonic, Tails, join Knuckles to protect the Emerald and go back to living with the Wachowski.
In the end, the members of the GNU are cleaning up the mess that was made by the battle for the Emerald. Robotnik's assistant, Stone, infiltrates the building and pretends to clear up the mess along with the others. Since we don't know where Robotnik went, we learn that Stone is looking for the evil villain. This is when he overhears a conversation between Commander Walters, the leader of G.U.N., and one of his agents. The agent says that they were getting rid of any evidence of their relation to Robotnik and in the process find a secret file about a 50-year-old experiment. Walters recognizes it as Project: Shadow. At the same time, we see a black and red hedgehog who looks just like Sonic, open his eyes.
A third movie has already been confirmed and we will be seeing what is in store. Additionally, there will also be a spin-off series with Knuckles in the lead for Paramount+. There is a lot to look forward to for Sonic fans.
