The Conjuring franchise made the Warrens catapult into the 21st Century public knowledge. Let us check out some of the more interesting cases investigated by the famous couple.

The Conjuring

The Conjuring franchise has won many hearts over the world and has a special place in the heart of the horror fans especially. Known as demonologists, authors, lecturers, and occult museum owners Ed and Lorraine Warren are two of the world’s most well-known paranormal investigators. Their casework, much of which was carried out through their New England Society for Psychic Research, involved everything from exorcisms alongside priests, seances and spirit cleansings to photographic documentation of supernatural events. Being a part of these cases has also made them known to people and places around the country, resulting in supernatural accounts so disturbing they’ve inspired numerous box office adaptations. The Warrens had quite a few well-known cases during their career and two of them were made into movies. The recent news of 'The Conjuring 4' being in the works has excited all the fans and let's just say, it is more than enough to get the fans to feel more than excited. But, until the movie hits the big screen, let's have a look at a few other interesting cases the Warrens have investigated.

1. The Amityville Horror

The Amityville Horror is perhaps one of the most famous cases that the Warrens worked on. This Warren case involved the Lutz family when the couple took up residence in a suburban, Dutch Colonial house in Amityville, Long Island in 1975. Just a year before the Lutzes moved in, the residence had been the site of a deadly mass murder when Ronald DeFeo, Jr. brutally killed six members of his family. The haunting was so severe that the Lutzes claimed that they fled from the home 28 days later. The family reported antagonistic voices, swarms of flies, welts, family members levitating, banging noises, and unseen entities. The Warrens were eventually called and the Lutzes story gained a lot of media attention and brought a local TV crew with them. After snapping photos, including one featuring a boy with glowing eyes, the Warren’s determined that the land had curses on it. In a 2013 interview with Yahoo!, Lorraine Warren said the Amityville house was the one case that haunts her the most. In a press conference, she said, "Amityville was horrible. It was absolutely horrible. It followed us right straight across the country ... I will never go to the Amityville house ever again.”

2. The Demonic Possession of Arne Cheyenne Johnson

Also known as 'The Devil Made Me Do It',  the trial of Arne Cheyenne Johnson was the first case in the United States to use demonic possession as a defense. He stood trial for murdering his landlord Alan Bono on November 24, 1981, in Brookfield, Connecticut and as a part of his testimony,  Johnson claimed that an 11-year-old boy acted as host to the demon that made him murder Bono. After a while, the Warrens were brought in to exorcise the demon from the child, and after several days, the demon left and entered Johnson, forcing him to kill Bono. Johnson was convicted but only served five years of his 10- to the 20-year sentence before being released.

3. The Haunting In Connecticut

Carmen and Al Snedeker rented a home in Southington, Connecticut to be closer to the hospital where their son was receiving treatment as he was suffering from a terminal disease in 1986. But, the family had no idea that the house they were moving into was a former funeral home that had remnants of a mortuary in the basement and a graveyard outside. The eldest son started having terrifying visions of ghosts and the family would go on to uncover the existence of the tags in the house regularly. Several other incidents such as lights often flickered, dishes would shake, the smell of decaying flesh hovered, and reportedly water would, on occasion, turn blood red. The couple even allegedly said that the demons had sodomized them during their two year period there. They finally got in touch with Ed and Lorraine Warren and the investigators attributed the hauntings to the ghosts of those who were brought to the funeral home. According to the Warrens, the morticians partook in unsavory activities with the dead bodies. After a two-year stay, the Snedekers finally moved out.

4. Annabelle the Doll

This is one of the investigations that can easily be the most famous or infamous case of the Warrens. This case took them rather to a thing than a person. They encountered a Raggedy Ann doll that was purchased in an antique store and, on the surface, the doll didn't look sinister at all.  Given to the buyer’s daughter, the nursing student and her roommate quickly began to notice odd occurrences involving the doll such as changing positions or rooms and it eventually escalated to messages being written on papers and blood on the doll’s dress, and at one point violence. The spirit or whatever that was in the doll took aim at the fiancé of one roommate, who claims he woke up frozen in bed as the doll crawled up his body and strangled him and he also claimed that upon entering a darkened room where the doll rested he felt something attack him. The Warrens were called and involved in the case and determined that the doll was possessed by a demon. They performed a blessing in the residence before taking Annabelle off the young women’s hands. Annabelle has since become a permanent and prominent fixture in the Warrens' Connecticut Occult museum.

5. The Smurl Haunting

This haunting supposedly took place from 1974 to 1989 and it happened in the home of Jack and Janet Smurl. The couple claimed that they witnessed multiple instances of paranormal events, for example, unexplained noises, smells and objects moving on their own. After enduring a long period of the haunting, the Smurls called the Warrens and they concluded that the house was infested with spirits. But that's not all. There was a demon too who sexually assaulted both the Smurls.
