Filming for the pilot episode of CW's upcoming 'The Powerpuff Girls' Live-Action Reboot has finally begun. Here's a first look at our favorite childhood superheroes all grown up.
CW is bringing our favorite childhood trio back in this upcoming live-action reboot of 'The Powerpuff Girls.'
The original cartoon followed three superhero sisters, Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup, who were accidentally created by their dad (Professor Utonium) when he added “Chemical X” to his mixture of “sugar, spice, and everything nice” in his basement laboratory.
The original creator of 'The Powerpuff Girls', Craig McCracken, will not be involved in the live-action reboot. Nonetheless, he told Syfy that he is “curious to see what [The CW] do with it.”
The plot of the upcoming reboot will be very different from the original cartoon.
Here is everything you need to know about the upcoming 'The Powerpuff Girls' Reboot.
Simply called 'Powerpuff,' the upcoming reboot series will feature our favorite childhood cartoon characters now all grown up.
The girls are already in their 20s, and they begrudge having lost their childhood to crime-fighting.
However, unfortunate circumstances will arise that will force them to reunite and save the world again.
In March 2021, Variety revealed details about the grown-up superheroes.
Here's how the outlet described Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup's characters.
Blossom: “Though she was a spunky, conscientious, Little-Miss-Perfect child who holds several advanced degrees, [Blossom] has repressed kiddie-superhero trauma has left her feeling anxious and reclusive, and she aims to become a leader again, this time on her own terms.”
Bubble: “Bubbles’ sweet-girl disposition won America’s hearts as a child. She still sparkles as an adult, but her charming exterior belies an unexpected toughness and wit. She’s initially more interested in recapturing her fame than saving the world, but she just might surprise us and herself.”
Buttercup: “Buttercup was the rebellious badass of The Powerpuff Girls in its heyday. More sensitive than her tough exterior suggests, Buttercup has spent her adulthood trying to shed her Powerpuff Girl identity and live an anonymous life.”
Chloe Bennet, Dove Cameron, and Yana Perrault are cast to play the iconic superhero roles Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup respectively.
Chloe Bennet is known for her role in Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. After her Powerpuff casting announcement, the actress dyed her hair red and shared her new updo on her Instagram captioned: "female, asian, red-headed, superhero (again),” she wrote. “✨fuck yeah,✨ Go ahead and normalize being anything you want hunnyyy.”
Meanwhile, 25-year-old Dove Cameron is known for her appearances in Liv and Maddie and The Descendants films. The former Disney Channel child star has taken acting seriously and even starred alongside Chloe in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Cameron has also been very generous in giving us sneak peeks of the upcoming reboot, making us love her even more.
To complete the trio, we have Yana Perrault portraying Buttercup. Perrault is an accomplished Broadway actress, and 'Powerpuff' is going to be her screen debut.
Donald Faison will be joining the cast list as Professor Utonium, the Powerpuff Girls’ scientist father.
Nicholas Podany will play Mojo Jojo. Just like Perrault, Podany also has a Broadway background. According to Variety, the grown-up Jojo will have some identity struggles.
“As a kid, the nerdy, power-hungry, insecure JoJo was obsessed with The Powerpuff Girls, despite his father’s grudge against them. As an adult, JoJo finds his sweetness and rage in constant battle."
CW is yet to announce a release date for 'Powerpuff.' Filming on the series pilot began in April 2021, so it looks like the wait will still be extensive. As of this writing, only the pilot episode for 'Powerpuff' has been ordered yet.
We will continue to check on future updates and edit this article from time to time.
