The film is based on an eponymous book by English journalist-novelist Jojo Moyes. It follows a young journalist who stumbles upon a stack of love letters from the 1960s. She quickly falls in love with their story and decided to track them down. Unexpectedly, her actions lead to a heart-warming happy ending that these two star-crossed lovers truly deserve. Ellie is a young and formidable feature writer at the Chronicles. Looking for stories, she takes a walk to the archive department. She met Rory along the way, and the two stumbled upon some old letters written between "Boot" and "J".
In the 1960s, there was an elegant woman trapped in a loveless marriage. Her name is Jennifer. She is married to an elite man named Lawrence, or Larry. Their marriage is more for convenience than love. One fateful day, a reporter from the London Chronicle named Anthony O’Hare visited Jennifer's home, hoping to write an article about her aristocratic husband. It wasn't a pleasant first meeting, but a hilarious and humble letter from Anthony opened a door to their new friendship. The two began exchanging letters, and love slowly blossomed in their hearts. But like Romeo and Juliet, their love is not supposed to be. It is not just because of their social differences but also because Jennifer is married. The two occasionally meet up, but there is always a barrier between their love.
As the movie moves on, we later found out that Anthony and Jennifer were the owners of the letter Ellie found. Ellie gets invested in the star-crossed lovers' story. She decided to track down Anthony and Jennifer to find out how their story ends.
Jennifer and Anthony eventually end up together during their old years, thanks to Ellie who served as Fate's little aide-de-camp.
Back in the 60s, Anthony secured a job in New York City. He found the courage to ask Jennifer to elope with him, leave everything behind, and start a new and happy life together. He asks Jennifer to meet with him at the Marylebone Station, where they would board the train towards their new life at the Big Apple. Although it was a hard choice, Jennifer finally decides to follow her heart. That rainy night, she takes a cab to the train station to meet up with Anthony. However, she never arrives. The car crashes, rending Jennifer unconscious.
Upon returning home, she found out that her husband discovered her illicit affair. Larry told her that Anthony dies, explaining that Anthony was in the other car, also heading to the train station at the same time. Of course, it was all a lie, but her husband's story managed to keep Jennifer bound on their loveless marriage for years to come.
But like we said, Fate and destiny have their mysterious ways of bringing two hearts together. The two eventually reunite in London. Jennifer is surprised to find out that he is alive, while Anthony thought she didn't come to the train station because she has chosen her family over him. All those years, the two lived a life full of longingness and unfulfilled love. After knowing about her husband's lie, Jennifer confronts him and finally decided to split up. Unfortunately, she loses custody of her daughter, causing Jennifer to live a reclusive life.
Ellie has been dealing with romantic problems of her own. However, she is so struck by Jennifer and Anthony's love. She convinces him to write one last letter to Jennifer, requesting her to meet at their usual park bench at 2 p.m.
Jennifer saw Anthony's letter and meets him there. The decades have turned their hairs grey, their hearts have been scarred with pain, but their love never faded.
Jennifer met an accident and didn't make her way to the train station. However, the film's final moments showed an alternative scene of what could've happened if she did.
Before the film ended, we were taken back to the scene where Jennifer and Anthony are young again. In this scene, Jennifer made it to Marylebone Station at the last minute, and Anthony lifts her into the rail coach. The scene serves as a modified ending of what could've happened if Jennifer managed to board the train. It was an emotional scene that depicts the happiness that might have awaited them, only if they both knew the truth. Nonetheless, our hearts are content knowing that the star-crossed lovers eventually found their way in each other's arms.
