The Fear Street Director Wants It To Become The MCU Of Horror

In an interview with Indiewire, Fear Street director, Leigh Janiak, spoke about her plans for the future of the series.

Fear Street

The Fear Street film series on Netflix was a total smash hit, dominating the streaming giant's top ten lists worldwide.

A series that could have gone so wrong, has actually managed to captivate the world with its storytelling. But, what's next for the Fear Street film series?

Well, the director, Leigh Janiak, wants to turn the franchise into a full-on universe very similar to that of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. She spoke about her plans in an interview with Indiewire.

She said:

One of the exciting things about Fear Street is the fact that the universe is big and allows for a lot of space. One of the things that I talked about before I was hired was that we have a potential here to create a horror, where you can have slasher killers from lots of different eras. You have the canon of our main mythology that’s built around the fact that the devil lives in Shadyside, so there’s also room for everything else.
The Fear Street Trilogy
I think that my hope is that audiences like it enough that we can start building out, we can think about what another trilogy would be, what standalones would be, what TV would be. I don’t even think about it like TV or movies exactly anymore. That’s the great thing about Netflix and about what Fear Street is, which is kind of a hybrid new thing. I’m excited about the possibility of what else can happen. I really started getting excited about a ’50s slasher movie, which I haven’t really seen and what that means. It’s just cool to think about the different eras and what’s possible as a horror fan.

The final film in the Fear Street trilogy entitled Fear Street Part 3: 1666 premiered on July 16th and scored a 93% critic rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It was even very well received by the worldwide audience who gave it an 84% score.

With 150 stories in the RL Stine's Fear Street collection, there is no shortage of content for Netflix to work with. Whether or not they can all be successfully integrated into a universe is another story. Many films tried to find the success that the MCU found and many failed. The most successful universe after the MCU is The Conjuring Universe. Can the Fear Street series conjure up a universe on par with the MCU? Only time will tell.

The Fear Street trilogy is now streaming on Netflix.
