The latest 'Conjuring' film was released last year but fans of the franchise are already eagerly waiting for the next installment.
The Conjuring Universe has some really spine-chilling films that have kept us on the edge of our seats since 2013. Following the first film, there was a spin-off featuring the haunted doll in the 2014 film, Annabelle. Two films of both the original Conjuring and the spin-off, Annabelle, followed over the years along with other spin-offs including The Nun and The Curse of La Llorona which takes place in the same universe.
The latest Conjuring film was released earlier last year and was titled The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It. This threequel deviated from the franchise's supernatural and paranormal roots and delved into a legal trial where the defendant claimed to have been possessed during the crimes of which he is accused. Fans of the franchise are already eagerly waiting for the next installment. Here is everything you need to know about what's in store.
The Conjuring world is based on the real-life cases of Ed and Lorraine Warren, who were paranormal investigators and authors associated with prominent yet controversial cases of hauntings and possessions. The original film in the series was based on the Perron family who claimed that their Rhode Island home was cursed and haunted. The other films are based on investigations the husband-wife duo carried out. They claim to have investigated over 10,000 cases during their lifetime. The producers of the Conjuring franchise are not about to run out of stories for Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga as Ed and Lorraine to play any time soon.
A fourth movie is inevitable but there has been no official confirmation or announcement from Warner Bros. yet. However, we do have official news about a few spin-offs in the works, so keep reading.
The fourth film in the series will help expand The Conjuring Universe further. With various spin-offs in the works, the next film may take a leaf from another film in the series for setting the premise. The eight films so far in the series can serve as a prequel to the fourth Conjuring movie. Besides, there have been so many cases from the Warrens' folder that have not been explored yet. This includes cases such as that of the "White Lady" ghost which haunts Union Cemetery or the Smurl family haunting as well.
Previously, there has been a minimum gap of three years before a new Conjuring sequel was released. At that rate, the earliest we'll be seeing another Conjuring film may be in 2024.
While there may not be any news about The Conjuring 4, there has been confirmed news about two spin-offs that are already in the works. The Crooked Man, based on the character by the same name in The Conjuring 2, is a project that producer Peter Safran has been working on since 2018. Speaking to CinemaBlend at the time he said, “We’re still working on the script for it. The bar is set very high for the movies that we want to make in The Conjuring Universe, and until we get to that place we’re not interested in putting one of these out there into the universe. I still think The Crooked Man could be a very interesting and different story.” It took a back seat as The Nun was given priority.
Speaking of The Nun, there is an untitled sequel to the spin-off featuring the "Demon Nun" character Valak from The Conjuring 2. In 2019, Safran told Entertainment Weekly, “I think there is an inevitability to another Nun movie.”
