The series was released earlier this month and has managed to make it to the Top 10 list on Netflix.
Surviving Summer is an Australian teen drama Netflix series that follows a rebellious teen sent to live in the tiny fictional town of Shorehaven on the Great Ocean Road, Victoria, Australia. The first season of the show premiered on June 3, 2022, with 10 episodes.
The show was initially supposed to be roughly based on the hit 1998 film The Parent Trap to include two female cousins. But the story was later modified to include a boy in an attempt to be appealing to boys as well. The first season of the show was mostly well-received leaving some ardent viewers to wonder if the show will be back for another season. Here's what we know so far:
The first season of the show was released earlier this month. The show managed to make it to the Top 10 list on Netflix with 20,300,000 hours viewed. Netflix usually does not announce a show's renewal unless it has the viewership data for the first 28 days. While it may be too soon to tell if Surviving Summer will be coming back for another season, chances of it being renewed can't be ruled out at the moment.
Werner Film Productions stated in a blog post on their site that the team has their "fingers crossed that Shorehaven will charm viewers as it does Summer and that there will be a second season, ideally with suitable surf." Joanna Werner, executive producer of the show shared, "I like seeing positive things on TV. My kids are little, but they watch Bluey and what I love about it is that, rather than conflict, the siblings are lovely to each other. TV for a young audience does affect their worldview, so having some positivity reflected to them is important. We wanted this to be a warm show and we’re not ashamed of it being warm-hearted. We feel as though it’s somewhere that you’d like to be."
The show also qualifies for the Netflix Kids top 10s where it’s performing well. If it is on Netflix's agenda to have more heart-warming tween content, then we may just be seeing another season of Surviving Summer.
Expelled from school and exiled to Australia, Summer Torres (Sky Katz) a rebel New York teen, arrives in the fictional town of Shorehaven already thinking of ways to escape. She is taken in by her mother, Margot (Kate Beahan)'s, and friend, Abbie Gibson (Adrienne Pickering). Abbie lives with her husband, Thommo (Dustin Clare), their teenage son, Ari (Kai Lewins), and his younger sister, Honey (Asmara Feik). Despite her best efforts, Summer ends up falling in love with the town, its people, and most importantly the surf. She manages to make waves among Ari's inner circle yet again leaving a mess in her wake. The show had 10 episodes.
(Spoiler alert) At the end of the first season, Summer is taken back home after her fruitful time spent in Australia. If the show does get renewed for another season, it will likely pick up with Summer in New York. Either the plot will develop to invite a new challenge to head back to Australia or for her new friends to come over to America as they pursue their surfing dreams.
We can expect to hear from Netflix soon.
