Squid Game is coming back for a second season and has now been confirmed by the creator Hwang Dong-hyuk himself!

There was speculation about the inevitability of a second season considering how the first season ended with a lot of loose strings. But Hwang has promised that the show is not over yet. "There will indeed be a second season," he told AP Entertainment. "It's in my head right now, I'm in the planning process currently." The cast of Squid Game was in Los Angeles on November 8 for a promotional event for the show where he made this much-anticipated announcement.

“There’s been a lot of demand and pressure and love for a second season. It almost feels like we don’t have a choice," he said. "At this moment, I’m in the planning stages. It’s too early to say when and how it will come out though. But I can promise this. The main character, Gi Hun, will be back and do something for the world.” The director said this in reference to the main character, Seong Gi Hun, who is played by Lee Jung Jae. For those who have not watched the show yet, (spoiler alert!) Gi Hun wins the games and in the last scene, is about to get on a plane to America to meet his daughter. But he gets a call from the anonymous group that conducts these deadly games and walks away from his flight with a determination as fiery as his red hair.

So far, there has not been an official announcement from Netflix about the renewal of the show. But Hwang has come a long way from being averse to a second season to finally coming to terms with the demand for a new season. Speaking to The Guardian, he had stated about the second season: “Of course there is talk. That’s inevitable because it’s been such a success. I am considering it. I have a very high-level picture in my mind, but I’m not going to work on it straight away. There’s a film I really want to make. I’m thinking about which to do first. I’m going to talk to Netflix.”

The show was based on Hwang's own financial trouble that made him consider joining such a survival game if it were real. “Because the show is motivated by a simple idea,” he stated. “We are fighting for our lives in very unequal circumstances.” He also added, “I wanted to create something that would resonate not just for Korean people but globally. This was my dream.” Something he has managed to do well, indeed.
