'Russian Doll' Season 3: Everything We Know So Far

The show received critical acclaim for its unique storyline and even got four Primetime Emmy Award nominations.

Russian Doll Season 3

Russian Doll is the sci-fi comedy-drama created by Natasha Lyonne, Leslye Headland, and Amy Poehler, starring Lyonne in the lead role as Nadia Vulvokov. The show follows Nadia, a game developer who repeatedly dies and relives the same night in an ongoing time loop and tries to solve it.

The first season with eight episodes premiered on February 1, 2019. The same year, it was renewed for another season. The second season finally premiered on April 20, 2022, with seven episodes. The show received critical acclaim for its unique storyline and even got four Primetime Emmy Award nominations. Here's what you need to know about the future of the show:

Will There Be Season 3 Of Russian Doll?

As of now, there has not been any official confirmation with regard to the renewal of the show. "If season one was Groundhog Day, well, season two is going to be Quantum Leap," Lyonne had told The Hollywood Reporter about the show. "That idea oddly has a lot in common with what my sense of what a season three might be, but it still has trans-mutated over time as the series itself has evolved and changed." From this, we can assume that a third season is in the works and just needs a go-ahead from Netflix.

Lyonne added, "At the time of our pitch, we essentially had a pilot pitch fully realized and a sense of an arc and a sense of three seasons. Now that things have evolved, I can see where there’s still a germ of that."

Natasha Lyonne Leave Hopeful Update

In a conversation on THR's Awards Chatter podcast, Lyonne was prompted about the prospects of a third season for "Russian Doll." Having co-created the series alongside Leslye Headland and Amy Poehler, Lyonne's responses throughout the interview imply her willingness to inhabit the role of Nadia once again in the future. Nevertheless, the Emmy-nominated actress underscores her current focus on directing her debut feature film and her ongoing Peacock project, the murder-mystery series "Poker Face," which

has been greenlit for a second season. Towards the latter part of her statement, presented below, Lyonne takes an amusingly grim turn:

I believe there's potential for more beyond that down the line. However, I sense that it will demand a considerable amount of time. The entertainment industry is undergoing a tumultuous phase, and from my perspective, directing my first feature takes precedence. It's a priority for me over committing to a third season of 'Russian Doll.' Additionally, we've now embarked on the 'Poker Face' venture. In retrospect, categorizing 'Russian Doll' as a limited series might have been more fitting, considering that was the original intention. Interestingly, the second season closely aligns with the initial pitch, where the storyline explores her transformation into her mother.
Given the complexities of factors such as COVID and the four-year gap, I've gravitated towards roles that embody timeless characters, unbound by age. I don't foresee any issues with Nadia reemerging at 60, grappling with quintessential New York predicaments. It's not necessarily my immediate focus, but from a philosophical perspective, I believe 'Russian Doll' is a realm I'll never truly depart from. Hence, I presume I'll always find a connection—after all, life discovers a way. And so does demise, my companion.

What Will The Plot Of Russian Doll Season 3 Be?

The show has to be renewed for a new season. But Lyonne already has an idea about what it could be about. The first season was about the present, the second was about the future. When asked by Variety if the third one is about the future, she said, "Without saying too much, that thought has occurred to me, as well. The show is always going to be a philosophical, psychedelic meditation on the nature of time, mortality, and so on. Yes, one of the jumping-off points of Season 2 is this Italian physicist Carlo Rovelli and this idea about the arrow of time and asking the question, why can I remember the past, but I can’t remember the future? That opens up some big questions. And who knows? Who knows if they’ll ever let me do this again?"

The details of the next season will become clear when more official announcements are made.

Who Will Be In Russian Doll Season 3?

Lyonne will be returning as Nadia without a doubt as will Charlie Barnett as Alan Zaveri. Greta Lee as Maxine and Rebecca Henderson as Lizzy are also likely to come back for the next season since they are a fairly vital part of the show. Brendan Sexton III as Horse and Ritesh Rajan as Ferran may also be coming back. Surely, there will be new faces on the show as well depending on the direction the show will take for the third season.

When WIll Russian Doll Season 3 Be Released?

The show has currently not been renewed for a new season yet. But taking into consideration the first two seasons, it could take more than a year to see the show on Netflix. The second season took two years to complete due to the delays caused by the pandemic. But the third season could wrap up in a shorter time if it is renewed soon. We could possibly see Russian Doll Season 3 sometime in 2024 at the earliest.
