James Gunn’s popular DC series will return!
Peacemaker is an American superhero TV series created by James Gunn for HBO Max, based on the DC Comics character Peacemaker. Played by John Cena, the character fights for peace at any cost, no matter how many people he has to kill to get it. The first season has won over many fans, thanks to the winning combination of John Cena, James Gunn, and a CGI eagle named Eagly. Season 2 is on its way, with Gunn directing and writing all episodes for the new season.

According to Deadline, Sarah Aubrey, Head of Original Content, HBO Max, said, “The brilliance of James Gunn once again shines with Peacemaker. He took this character, brought to life by the inimitable John Cena, and created an exceptional series that’s simultaneously thrilling, hilarious, and heartfelt, showcasing the humanity beneath this team of misfits living in a superhuman world. As the first original DC show to have its series premiere on HBO Max, we are thrilled that the viewers agreed to give peace a f*cking chance.”
Even James Gunn hasn't decided yet! "I'm still playing with a lot of different things. The most important thing for me in the first season was who Peacemaker was and where was he going - what was his personal journey? The Butterflies and the plot and all of that is secondary to who he was as a character and what his changes were, as well as the other characters and where they began and where they end because they all have little changes for themselves – with the exception of Vigilante, who’s sort of a straight line the whole time. So I know where Peacemaker starts and where he ends, but I’m playing with other ideas around that and how that’s gonna play out," the 55-year-old filmmaker told Variety.
John Cena, who plays the titular character, will be back. So will Freddie Stroma as Vigilante, along with key actors Danielle Brooks, Steve Agee, and Jennifer Holland. Robert Patrick might return as well, according to Digital Spy. That'll be interesting!
Currently, there is no specified release window for the upcoming second season of Peacemaker. Interestingly, it wasn't even included in the initial slate announcement for the DC Universe reboot, though rest assured, the continuation of the series is indeed on the horizon.
Director James Gunn took to Twitter to confirm that the second season of Peacemaker is scheduled to make its debut after the theatrical release of "Superman: Legacy" on July 11, 2025. This implies that fans eagerly awaiting the show will need to exercise patience, as there's a wait of at least two years before the series returns to the screen.
However, it's worth noting that there's a spin-off series centered around Waller currently in development. This spin-off will feature Viola Davis reprising her role as the titular character, and it is slated to have a release window prior to "Legacy." While it may not be Peacemaker Season 2, fans can take solace in the fact that there's related content to look forward to within the next couple of years.
One important aspect to consider is that the production for Peacemaker Season 2 won't kick off until both "Legacy" and the Waller spin-off are completed. Unfortunately, the current landscape of the entertainment industry is facing significant challenges due to the ongoing strikes by the Writers Guild of America (WGA) and the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA). These strikes have effectively paralyzed many aspects of production.
Given these circumstances, it becomes increasingly difficult to predict precisely when these two projects will even commence production. It's entirely plausible that it could be as late as 2025 before Peacemaker Season 2 finally begins production.
Considering these uncertainties and potential delays caused by industry strikes, it would be prudent for fans to manage their expectations and anticipate a release date for Peacemaker Season 2 in late 2025 or possibly even later. The intricate web of production schedules, strike resolutions, and post-production processes can introduce unforeseen variables, making it challenging to provide a more precise timeline at this juncture.
