The Bayview Four may have uncovered the identity of the true killer. However, a new blackmailer will not let them rest.
What already started as a bad first day at school turned out even worse after four students got investigated for the murder of another student during detention.
Soon, the four of them become the subject of scandalous gossips.
At the end of the mystery series, the four uncovers the identity of the actual killer. However, another blackmailer arises, threatening to expose their biggest secret just yet.
Here is what happened in 'One of Us Is Lying.'
It's the first day of school, and the students are in a frenzy for juicy updates from a gossip app called About That. The app promises to reveal some scandalous secrets from one of the students in the next few days. During the day, Bronwyn, Nate, Cooper, Addy, and Simon get punished for different reasons by their teacher, Ms. Avery. The five students end up in detention together.
Bronwyn got punished after someone left a mysterious phone in her backpack. While in detention, Simon drinks water from the caller and suddenly has a seizure and dies.
Nate found out that a peanut oil poisoned Simon, who is allergic to peanuts. Suspiciously, the school also ran out of epi-pens on that same day, convincing the police that Simon got murdered. The four students eventually got investigated for Simon's death.
Meanwhile, the gossip app continues to reveal scandalous news about most of the students. The app says that Nate has a criminal record, and he sold drugs to a girl who later died of an overdose. It also revealed that Bronwyn stole exam papers. Cooper loses hope to get a baseball scholarship after the app reveals he is using performance-enhancing drugs. The app has not revealed his gender identity, but Cooper lives in constant anxiety that his sexual preference might get disclosed.
Addy also became a subject of the app, which revealed she cheated on her boyfriend, Jake. The gossip leads to their breakup.
However, when Jake and Addy briefly reunite, Addy discovers that Jake is chatting online with someone who uses the same username as Simon (“Anarchi$k”).
When she shares this with the group, they realize that Jake may have something to do with Simon's death.
In a series of flashbacks, we discovered that Jake and Simon used to be childhood friends. However, the friendship grew apart after Jake became a popular "jock." Nonetheless, they continue their habit of calling out fake people on campus. They like to play a game of "dare" where they each ask each other to do crazy things.
Although the two are no longer as close as they used to be, Jake asks Simon to do one last dare. Unknown to Jake, Simon recorded their conversations through the video game console.
The four students plan to steal the console from Jake's room to clear their names and uncover the truth. While everyone is busy during a Halloween party, Addy and Cooper sneak into Jake's room and steal the console. However, Jake comes running after them. They end up in the forest where Jake points a gun at Addy. However, Cooper and Janae attack Jake before he could pull the trigger. In the middle of the fight, the gun accidentally goes off and hits Jake.
The season then ends with the police uncovering incriminating evidence against Jake in the console. The four students were cleared from the investigation and resume their daily life at school. However, each of them soon gets a message threatening to expose their secret.
As the series draws to the end, we learn that none of the four students (Bronwyn, Addy, Cooper, and Nate) murdered Simon. Simon himself smuggled the peanut oil as part of Jake's dare. Their original plan was to inject Simon with an epi-pen just in time to save his life and incriminate the four students with attempted murder.
Everything was supposed to be a prank, but Jake changed his mind after Simon tell him that Jake's girlfriend Addy, is cheating on him. Simon blackmails Jake with Addy's secret, so Jake decided to kill him and frame the death of his former best friend on Addy. It's like taking down two birds with a single stone.
Jake was supposed to wait outside the detention room to save Simon at the last moment. But instead, Jake takes away all the epi-pens from the dispensary and left Simon to die.
But of course, not everyone believes this. Some people at the school still think that Jake only got framed for the murder. None of them (except Bronwyn, Nate, Cooper, Addy, and Janae) knows that Jake is already dead after getting shot in the brawl in the forest. Although we did not see it, it seems like the students secretly buried Jake's body and claimed he ran away.
However, someone else seems to know their secret and are now blackmailing them. Who is the blackmailer? We will only find out if the show returns for another season.
The ending is a great setup for a second season of 'One of Us Is Lying.' As of this writing, there is no official renewal for season 2 yet. But with the way the first season ended, a follow-up season seems to be just around the corner.
