BoJack Horseman is the Netflix adult animated series about the titular anthropomorphic horse who is a washed-up star of a 1990s sitcom. The series has been lauded as one of the best series in recent times due to its accurate depiction of mental health issues, societal problems, and the human condition in general.
The show was created by Raphael Bob-Waksberg and first premiered in 2014. It had a successful run with six seasons and even received several accolades, including four Critics' Choice Television Awards for Best Animated Series, three Annie Awards, two Writers Guild of America Awards, and three Primetime Emmy Award nominations, including two for Outstanding Animated Program.
What does the future of BoJack Horseman look like?
The show has been airing on Netflix since 2014 and has had regular renewals over the course of seven years. In 2019, Netflix announced that the show was renewed for a sixth season which would also be the last season of the show. As one of the streamer's earliest original shows, it also marked the end of an era for Netflix. Bob-Waksberg had said, a year before the show ended, “I think we’ll kind of see what happens. I think whether it has a long life or a relatively short life, I feel very lucky that I get to make it for as long as I get to make it."
Despite the show doing well, it was canceled much to the disappointment of the fans. Many believed it to be because of the show's artist union that was able to get a satisfactory deal with The Animation Guild which supposedly did not please Netflix. Another show made by the same animation studio, ShadowMachine, was canceled by Netflix. But animator Aaron Long said this was not true since they had already decided on ending the show much before they struck a deal, as reported by Screenrant. The decision to end BoJack seems to have been a creative decision.
"I said [to Netflix] I would appreciate it if I could have the forewarning to give the show a proper finale, and not set up some cliffhangers that will never pay off," Bob-Waksberg had said of the show coming to a close. "When [Netflix] picked up season six, they said, ‘Hey, remember how you asked for that heads-up? We think that this is your heads-up.’ So I’m very grateful that we got that notice." Fans would agree that the show did end in a satisfactory manner.
The show starred the voices of Will Arnett as BoJack, Amy Sedaris as Princess Carolyn, Alison Brie as Diane Nguyen, Paul F. Tompkins as Mr. Peanutbutter, and Aaron Paul as Todd Chavez. It was executive produced by Bob-Waksberg, Steven A. Cohen, and Noel Bright, along with Arnett and Paul as well.
