The new Polish film, W Jak Morderstwo or In for a Murder is the latest crime-comedy film that you can now watch on Netflix. Directed by Piotr Mularuk, the story follows a stay-at-home mom, Magda, who is also an avid reader of crime stories. She ends up discovering the body of a murdered woman in a park. While she takes on the task of investigating the woman's murder, she soon discovers the deepest secrets of her small town's residents.
The film stars Anna Smołowik, Paweł Domagała, Szymon Bobrowski and based on the novel by Katarzyna Gacek of the same name. Here's everything you need to know about it, including the spoilers.
Magda is a mother of two who gave up her career to take care of her family. Her narcissistic husband, Thomas, is testing the limits of their relationship but she finds solace in her crime stories in her small town, Podkowa Lesna, near Warsaw. One day, she discovers a receipt for an expensive perfume in her husband's pocket and is delighted, thinking that it's for her. She takes her dog, Mela, out for a walk to share the news with her best friend, Elka. But Mela runs away and leads her to the body of a dead woman. Magda immediately contacts the local police and her friend Jason Sikora. Before Magda can get too involved in the case, Jason asks her to take a step back. But Magda is already thinking of possible theories, especially after she spots a necklace with a "W" pendant that she had gifted to her best friend, Weronika, who had gone missing.
Magda believes that the two cases may be related and starts her own investigation. While at a dinner party at wealthy entrepreneur Jaroslaw Czerwinski's house, Magda spots the murdered woman in pictures shown by Susie Czerwinski taken at Bruno Szeliga’s house. Bruno was hoping to run for office and she spots the woman, identified as Joanna Maj, at the event. She was a hairdresser and Magda goes with Jason to her funeral to look for more clues. Magda sneaks into her house and finds a picture of Joanna with Weronika. Her mother catches her snooping around and asks her to leave before she could gather more information. She only learns that Joanna and Weronika were really good friends.
Magda then visits Weronika's mother to learn more about her missing friend. She learns from Weronika's mother that her friend had gotten pregnant before marriage which she knew her father disapproved of. Fearing this, she had run away from home. She met her friend Joanna at the restaurant they both worked at. Joanna had then introduced her to a man who had ruined Weronika's life. When Magda visits the restaurant the two women worked at, she discovers the man Weronika had been seeing was Bruno. She then connects the dots and informs Jason that she suspected Bruno's wife, Barbara of killing Weronika. To find this out, the two of them trespass into Bruno's property looking for her body. A distressed Bruno asks them to leave and later tries to move Weronika's body himself. He then gets caught redhanded with the body.
Bruno confesses that he had not killed Weronika but she had fallen down the stairs accidentally. But since it was an extramarital affair and no one would believe him he says he decided to bury her instead of revealing the truth. This, however, was not the case at all.
When Magda is at Szeliga’s she overhears a conversation where Barbara confesses to killing Weronika. She says that she had been trying for years with Bruno to have a child but Weronika was carrying his child now. She feared he would give away all his wealth to her, which was why she had pushed Weronika down the stairs. She also then confesses to killing Joanna as well since she had come in search of Weronika to their house. Fearing she would reveal too much, Barbara had stabbed her in the park. Czerwinski was also involved in the coverups and the two of them are put behind bars.
