Netflix Drops Surprise Blumhouse Horror Film 'Mercy Black', And It's Based On A True Story!

The Blumhouse horror movie is loosely inspired by the Slenderman controversy and the U.K. Mary Bell child killer case.

Oh Netflix, you never cease to amaze us. Just as we thought it was going to be yet another regular Sunday for us Netflix fanatics, the streaming platform gave us quite a 'chilling' treat with the Blumhouse horror movie Mercy Black. Albeit being a surprise, there were already quite a few murmurs around Netflix dropping a surprise for us, reported Movieweb.

But little did we know it would come from Austin writer-director Owen Egerton (Follow, Blood Fest) and it is also sort of inspired by the Slenderman controversy and the U.K. Mary Bell child killer case. However, it has its own voice. The movie stars Daniella Pineda along with Austin Amelio, Elle LaMont, Lee Eddy, Janeane Garofalo, and Miles Emmons.

Egerton recently spoke about the movie and said, "I'm trying to scare myself with concepts and moments." He told Entertainment Weekly, "It's the story of a woman 15 years after she stabbed a classmate. She committed this horrendous act to conjure a phantom called Mercy Black."

"She's just now getting out of a mental asylum and presumably cured but she's beginning to see all the things she never thought she'd see again. The creature becomes a viral success, even her young nephew is becoming obsessed with this Mercy Black, and she has to, perhaps for the first time ever, face what she's done and the power of this mythical creature."

It all started with Egerton meeting the team of Blumhouse, and especially Jason Blum for the Mercy Black project. The duo wanted a movie that could scare the wits out of the audience, however, without the use of jump scares. And the filmmaker believes he was indeed successful in scaring the audience with his characters as they got emotionally attached to the characters.

He added, "It's filled with scares and surprises and all the stuff I love in horror movies, but some of the most terrifying moments are when two people are talking and a truth comes out that's just too hard to take."

So what are you waiting for? Grab a bucket full of popcorn and check out the surprise Blumhouse horror film because it is indeed an intense story that might just keep you up all night!
