A Bird Box sequel is currently in the works, author Josh Malerman revealed back in July 2020. What most people don’t know is that before the post-apocalyptic horror-thriller film hit Netflix, it was first a compelling novel written by Malerman in 2014. Malerman has already released the follow-up book. The sequel is titled Malorie, based on Sandra Bullock‘s character in Bird Box. Here’s everything we know so far.
What Is The Plot Of Malorie?
Malorie will pick up the narrative from the ending of the first film. To give you a quick refresher, towards the end of Bird Box, we saw Malorie taking refuge in the school of the blind, together with her two children, after a long, precarious, blindfolded journey.
Malevolent supernatural entities have taken over the planet, and whoever looks at them sees their greatest fear, gets insane, and dies by suicide. Clinically insane people, on the other hand, have the opposite reaction to the entities. They seem to regain their sanity but develop a cult-like behavior worshipping the mysterious forces.
Along the journey, Malorie and her adopted children were hunted both by the entities and their newfound devotees, whose mission is to open people’s eyes and bring them to their doom. The sequel will be set 10 years from the movie’s ending.
In an interview with Inverse, Malerman revealed: “Malorie opens at the school for the blind, which is where the movie ends. Then it jumps a few years later, and it really takes off ten years after that.”
The Hollywood Reporter shared an extract of the follow-up book revealing Malorie and her children venturing the dangerous world with their blindfolds on again.
The three are forced to get out of the safety of the school after learning that there might be other survivors out there.
Will Malorie Be Adapted Into A Film Too?
Great news, yes! The novel sequel will be adapted into a film. Malerman revealed in the same interview that the movie sequel is already in development. This isn’t surprising considering how successful the film was when it launched on Netflix.
Although the film received mixed reviews from critics, it broke Netflix records with 47 Million views within seven days of its release.
When Will Malorie Release?
The book sequel was released on July 21, 2020. The movie’s release date remains unknown as of the moment. Netflix has also not officially announced that a sequel is in development yet. However, we are holding onto Malerman’s words, and we’re hoping to hear more about the movie sequel soon.
Susanne Bier, the director of the film was recently asked about the film in an interview with Variety and asked when we can expect the sequel. She said:
“Good question, right?”
This ideally means that production hasn’t started yet and they have not yet planned it out much either. So don’t expect to be seeing Malorie return anytime soon.
Who Will Be In The Cast Of Malorie Film Sequel?
There are no official announcements yet, but we are hoping that Sandra Bullock will return to reprise her role as Malorie alongside her adopted children Vivien Lyra Blair as Girl/Olympia and Julian Edwards as Boy/Tom.
