‘Away’ Season 2: Everything We Know So Far

‘Away,’ the sci-fi drama starring Hilary Swank, is one of the most expensive Netflix shows of all time. The show reportedly costs $6 million per episode but is well worth the price tag. ‘Away’ follows a group of scientists and astronauts led by Emma (Swank) on their expedition to Mars. And while the show’s jaw-dropping fireballs in space surely left the viewers in awe, it’s the message about hope, humanity, and helping each other to achieve impossible things that get embedded in the minds and hearts of the viewers. After a highly successful season 1, let’s find out what’s next for the series.

Is ‘Away’ Renewed For Season 2?

Sadly, Netflix is no longer renewing ‘Away’ for season 2, Variety reported on Oct 19, 2020. The show dropped on the platform on September 4th, 2020, and has since skyrocketed in the streamer’s top 10. We thought that the show’s top 10 performance was a positive sign. We know how Netflix gives importance to viewership records, and with the show’s popularity, we believed they’ll please the streaming giant enough to secure a renewal. Unfortunately, this didn’t happen. Netflix didn’t provide any explanation for why the show was axed, but Decider had 3 theories. First, it could be because it was expensive. Second, long delays in production brought by the COVID-19 pandemic could also add to the already big expenditures for the series. Lastly, the series is not totally owned by Netflix. ‘Away‘ might have been billed as a ‘Netflix Original,” but it was produced by NBC Universal, who licensed the rights to Netflix. This means that the series will go back to NBC Universal’s control in the future, which possibly discouraged the streamer.

When Will ‘Away’ Season 2 Release On Netflix?

The show is already canceled, so we will no longer see season 2 on Netflix in the future (unless the streaming giant changes its mind).

The Plot: What Could Happen In ‘Away’ Season 2?

Before receiving the official announcement of the show’s cancelation, writer and executive producer Jessica Goldberg had already drafted a plan regarding the show’s direction. Albeit, to set the expectations straight, this does not involve green men on Mars.

“When I say life, I mean like a microorganism,” Goldberg said via Inverse. “I don’t mean an alien. The show would never go in that direction.”

In season one, we saw five leading space agencies work together to bring the finest astronauts and scientists to Mars. There was little focus on private-sector space exploration, but Goldberg has teased this will likely change in the next season.

“I do feel that’s a story that’s super important,” Goldberg revealed, “Right now, we can’t get anywhere without that private-sector money, and I think it would be great to bring that storyline in.”

She added that the idea has been discussed a lot by the show’s writers. On the other hand, there are also small details that need attention. ‘Away’ may have mesmerized the audience with space exploration tales, but there’s no denying that the show’s core moves around people’s relationships. How much will the exploration affect the space crew’s relationship with their family and loved ones on Earth while they are millions of miles away? Guess we won’t have our answers anymore unless some other network, streamer, or studio picks the series up.

Who Will Be In The Cast Of ‘Away’ Season 2?

The series is already canceled, so we are no longer seeing our main cast members back. Main cast members include Hilary Swank as Emma Green, Josh Charles as Matt Logan, Vivian Wu as Lu Wang, Mark Ivanir as Misha, Ato Essandoh as Kwesi, Ray Panthaki as Group Captain Ram Arya, and Talitha Bateman as Alexis “Lex” Logan, among others.
