Kevin Smith Reveals Details on Justice League 2 and 3

Did you know that the Justice League was planned as a trilogy? Here are some juicy tidbits of information we gathered about what the films may have covered.

Justice League

Now that Zack Snyder's done with the DCEU, we can have a little bit of perspective on what we missed out on. Execs tampered with Snyder's original version heavily and called for edits and reducing them down to next to nothing. It's not really a surprise he left with such a bad taste in his mouth for both DC and Warner Bros. Even so, there have been details emerging about Snyder's original vision. Kevin Smith mentions that on his visit to London to visit the set of Justice League, details emerged that most people weren't aware of. Some of us did know that initially, Snyder intended Justice League to be a trilogy. However, information on the trilogy is only now coming to light. Some of the crew who worked on the film back up the supposition that this would have been an epic movie experience, making the loss of the next two films even harder for DC fans to bear.

Planning Was Already Done

Smith notes that when he visited, the entire trilogy covered an immense arc that incorporated new heroes and tremendous villains from the DC Universe. Artist and co-publisher from DC Jim Lee had already drawn out storyboards for the trilogy and laid them out to fulfill Snyder's vision. The first movie was more or less in-line with what the plan demanded, albeit not the version that was eventually released. The heroes meet Darkseid, and it sets the stage for what follows in the second movie in the series.

For part two of the trilogy, the heroes head to Apokolips and New Genesis and take them on in the outer reaches of the cosmos. While New Genesis might have seen inclusion or not, Smith is sure that the Apokolips arc would introduce Darkseid as the baddie for part two, building off the teaser at the end of part one. Additionally, he notes that the Green Lantern Corps are involved in some fashion. Many DC fans have been clamoring for the inclusion of Green Lantern in the Justice League. The second part of the trilogy seems to deliver on this promise. Smith noted that the first two Justice League films ended badly, along the same lines of "bad" as Infinity War, or The Empire Strikes Back.

Part three would see the heroes return to an earth reduced to a hunk of burning ash during their time in the cosmos fighting on Apokolips. The world is reduced to ashes, in line with the vision Bruce had during Batman v Superman in his Knightmare sequence. The heroes set up their last stand against Darkseid as the story draws to its epic closure. The three-movie deal went down to just two movies, and now the one. However, with the amount of editing that happened, it's understandable why Snyder would want to distance himself from the studio in the future.

What About the Snyder Cut?

After Justice League, there has been mounting pressure from DC fans to release the Snyder Cut of the film. Jason Momoa (Aquaman), who has seen the Snyder Cut himself, believes that fans need this version of the movie in their lives. However, if it were to release, it would leave fans feeling even more empty that they never got the three-film series that the original Justice League set out to be. The Snyder Cut focuses heavily on Darkseid as the eventual villain, while the theatrical release played up Steppenwolf as the primary villain. At the end of the Snyder Cut, Wonder Woman kills Steppenwolf, and we get a glimpse of Darkseid through a Boom Tube, which was supposed to lead into part two of the trilogy.

Unfortunately, we'll never see what Zack Snyder had planned for the rest of this series. RIP Justice League.
