The actor thinks that there are still some things that could get explored for the sequel.

It has been two years since 'Joker' hit the theaters, and until now, we remain hopeful that a sequel to the magnificent film is still happening.

'Joker' was undeniably one of the most successful films of the past decade, with $1.074 billion in box office earning and a slew of awards, including the coveted Academy Award for Best Actor for Joaquin Phoenix.

In 2019, there have been discussions for 'Joker 2' with reports that Warner Bros. and DC are planning to get Todd Phillips to direct the sequel. Sadly, Todd Phillips denied the report.

Recently, Joaquin Phoenix finally tells us the real deal with 'Joker 2.' According to the actor, there are no current plans for a sequel, but he would be keen to return should there be any in the future.

Phoenix appeared in an interview with The Playlist to promote his new drama film 'Cmon Cmon,' directed by Mike Mills. When asked if 'Joker 2' is still happening, Phoenix said: "I dunno." Nonetheless, the actor believes that there are still things to explore for the character.

"I mean, I dunno. From when we were shooting, we started to —you know, uhh, this is an interesting guy. There are some things we could do with this guy and could [explore] further. But as to whether we actually will? I don’t know."

There you have it, folks. 'Joker 2' seems like a far, far away dream by now. Judging by how the first movie wrapped the storyline, having a sequel will be very tricky. 'Joker' has set the bar so high and surpassing it will never be easy.

The film put the DC clown villain in a different light, and we cannot help but sympathize with him. The Clown Prince of Crime was not exactly the bad guy we used to see in the Batman movies. Instead, he was the voice of the oppressed, the hero of the people.

At the end of the film, we see Joker embracing his new path and inspiring the mob to rise against oppression in the dystopian Arkham City.

'Joker 2' might not be happening too soon. But with the magnitude of the first film's success, the demand for a sequel will always remain high.

One way or another, we are confident that the Clown Prince will eventually return in the future.

Until then, we will continue to wait for that fateful day. Miss Joker? The film is currently available for streaming on Amazon Prime.
