High Seas or Alta Mar is a Netflix Spanish mystery series. The show tells the story of two sisters who discover disturbing family secrets after a string of mysterious deaths that occur on a luxury ship traveling from Spain to Brazil in the 1940s.
The series first premiered in 2019 and was renewed almost immediately for a second season which was released in November. A third season was confirmed by Actor Jon Kortajarena, who portrays the character Nicolás Vázquez, who made the announcement on his Instagram. The third season released in August 2020. Here’s what you need to know about the future of the show:
Will There Be Season 4 Of High Seas?
Renewal Status: Canceled
The show received a good response due to the gripping storyline and the quick succession in which the first two seasons were released. The first two seasons were filmed at the same time, which made it possible for them to be released within a few months of each other. The storyline developed beyond the confines of the ship for the third season. At the time, Bambú Producciones, the production company behind the series, had revealed that the third and fourth seasons would be released, probably in the same way the preceding two seasons were. But in 2020, the fourth season was canceled.
The fourth season was canceled in 2020 and shared the same fate with The Cable Girls, another popular Spanish show on the streamer that was also canceled in a similar fashion. The reason attributed to this was, firstly, the lack of marketing on Netflix’s part. Additionally, the pandemic may have also caused the show to drop the fourth season. While a reason was not officially announced for canceling the show’s fourth season, it could have also been based on a dip in viewership across the seasons.
What Happened In High Seas So Far?
In the third season, we pick up nearly a year and a half after the second season’s events. Sisters, Eva (Ivana Baquero) and Carolina (Alejandra Onieva), are reunited as they board the Barbara de Braganza for another voyage, but this time under different circumstances. Eva is now a successful author who is also tasked by Brazilian spy Fabio (Marco Pigossi) to access the passenger records onboard to help figure out who the doctor was who developed a deadly virus for the Nazis.
We also see another subplot of Nicolas Vasquez (Jon Kortajarena) setting sail on the new cargo ship owned by Carolina. But the smooth sailing is foiled by a takeover plan introducing a new conspiracy and out-of-the-world plot twists.
While we may not be getting another season of High Seas, Bambú Producciones has since released another limited series titled Jaguar that is also fast-paced and tells the story of the survivors of the Nazi concentration camps during the Second World War who are now trying to hunt down prominent Nazis who managed to escape after the war ended, in the hopes of exacting justice.
