The Bold Type, a series based on the life and career of former editor-in-chief of Cosmopolitan magazine, Joanna Coles, has come to an end. The critically-acclaimed series aired its final episode on June 30 on Freeform. Earlier this year, Freeform announced season 5 of the series but also confirmed that it would be the last, dashing the hopes of fans who wanted to see more of the series. The highlight of the series has been the bond between Jane Sloan (played by Katie Stevens), Kat Edison (Aisha Dee), and Sutton Brady-Hunter (Meghann Fahy), reported Newsweek. The series follows their lives as they work for Scarlet, a fictional global women's magazine, spearheaded by its editor-in-chief, Jacqueline Carlyle (Melora Hardin). The series shows the young women trying to find their feet as they chase ambitious dreams, and explore romantic relationships in New York City.

"After five empowering seasons, our trio is on the brink of defining who they really are and how best to leave their mark on the world. Their futures are bright, and their love and support for each other will never change," read the show's official synopsis.

The final season has just six episodes, a drastic reduction from the show's 16-episode-long fourth season. The first three seasons had 10 episodes each. While there have been speculations as to why the series was winding up, some believe the character arcs of the main characters have all come to fruition, bringing a natural end to the storylines. The viewership of the series has also declined in recent seasons with the fourth season of The Bold Type having a 32% decline in viewership compared to Season 3, according to TV Series Finale.

Season 4 ended with cracks appearing in Sutton and Richard's marriage after Sutton ruled out having children. Sutton ends up drunkenly hooking up with her married ex-boyfriend after Richard leaves. Kat calls curtains on her relationship with Conservative activist Ava while Jane is struggling to juggle her personal and professional life with colleague Scott, played by Mat Vairo. Season 5 shows Richard and Sutton's marriage falling apart. Jane gets promoted to editor-in-chief of Scarlett Magazine.

The Bold Type also found a global audience after four seasons of the series were streamed on Netflix. Freeform president Tara Duncan hailed the series and the impact it had on fans. "The Bold Type is a brand-defining show for Freeform. It's been refreshing, relatable, and fun to watch Kat, Jane and Sutton lean on their friendship to navigate the complexities of modern life," said Duncan.

"It's one of my favorite shows, and I am proud that we are giving the series the send-off Wendy [Straker Hauser, showrunner], the incredible cast and crew, and the beloved fans all deserve."

Straker Hauser, the showrunner of the series, said the show was very personal to her. "The Bold Type has been a gift that has truly changed my life. I spent my 20s in New York City working in magazines, so in many ways, the show feels very personal to my experiences. I have truly loved writing this show and living in this world," she said. "I will miss it terribly, but I am so grateful for the opportunity and glad to know it's been a comfort to so many people out there."
