Many people feel that The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise will not be the same without Johnny Depp playing the iconic Captain Jack Sparrow and it looks like his former costar is one of them. Kevin McNally who played Mr. Gibbs, Captain Jack's best crewmate across the five films in the Disney franchise told the Daily Express that he feels Depp should be recast. "I've never seen a hint of any dark side to Johnny. I see a great humanitarian and a beautiful human being. I don't see any impediment for him coming back and playing Jack Sparrow."

"I think there was a general feeling that without Jack there is no Pirates franchise. And there's probably a lot of truth in that. But now there have been questions about that, certainly why not have other Pirate films and certainly then why not have Jack back or Jack playing a different part. I mean I was musing about this the other day and you can easily think of stories in which maybe somebody is looking for Jack and come to Mr. Gibbs and say, ‘How would I find Jack?’ And so have a whole bunch of people on a trek to find the legendary Jack Sparrow. You can certainly keep those names alive, even in a film that doesn’t necessarily contain the [original] characters too much.”

Johnny Depp has been under the spotlight for the past few years since his ex-wife Amber Heard's allegations of domestic abuse. The 58-year-old actor also launched a libel case against a British tabloid that called him a 'wife-beater.' Depp eventually lost that case and, despite launching an appeal, was denied the right to have the case heard again in court. It's been a tumultuous time for the actor who had also been asked to resign from his role as Grindelwald in Fantastic Beasts. Depp said in a statement at the time, "My resolve remains strong, and I intend to prove that the allegations against me are false. My life and career will not be defined by this moment in time."

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Margot Robbie is set to star in a new Pirates of the Caribbean film for Disney. The upcoming film will not be a spin-off and instead will have an original plotline with new characters under the Pirates moniker. As for Depp and his iconic role it seems he might not be against the idea of portraying the character in the future. Speaking at the San Sebastian Film Festival earlier this year, as per LADBible, he said, "The beauty of Captain Jack Sparrow for me is that I can travel with Captain Jack in a box, literally Captain Jack in a box, and when the opportunity is right I'm able to go and visit people and places where the smiles and the laughs and the things that are important, the most important things in the world, are on the line. So I still travel with Captain Jack and if I have the opportunity, whenever I do, I will go to these places. I'll go to somebody's house... man, I'll perform at your kid's birthday party at this point!"
