Beware! Major spoilers for Echoes ahead.

Michelle Monaghan didn’t quite understand the scope of her role in Echoes when she started reading the first script. “I was [originally] thinking, ‘Oh no, this isn’t really twins. This is just one person, let’s be real,’” But later on, she found that the script had a shocking twist: Gina and Leni have been secretly switching their lives for years. The actress was enthusiastic when she realized she got to play two separate women with different personalities whose lives are so intertwined that even they can’t tell who’s who anymore.

"This is the greatest, biggest, most ambitious endeavor I could take on,” says Monaghan, whose past credits include thrillers like Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and Gone Baby Gone, as well as ambitious TV dramas True Detective and Messiah.

Echoes revolved around the story of twin sisters swapping themselves to share all the things they own including their husbands.

Echoes Plot:

The sisters' lives turn when one of them disappears, leaving the other to handle the consequences alone. The two sisters are close despite living very different lives. Echoes begin with the disappearance of Gina, who has been living as Leni at Mount Echo with the latter’s husband Jack Beck and daughter Mathilda “Mattie” Beck. When the Investigation begins, the search party and police officers fail to find any clue related to the disappearance of Gina. Leni, who has been living as Gina in Los Angeles with the latter’s husband Charlie Davenport, arrives at Mount Echo to find her missing sister. Then she goes to a cave which holds a special place in their lives, to realize her sister's disappearance. Leni appeared as “missing herself ".

Leni after an investigation found out that Gina had an affair with Dylan Thomas. She had to play as gina in front of Gina’s family. Meanwhile, Sheriff Floss investigates a case of a burnt-down church and a murder that happened in the church. Gina sends pictures of the same to leni. Leni finally finds out that Gina needs money to elope with Dylan. Later, Dylan is found dead. Gina puts the murder weapon in Lekin's car to get her arrested. And when floss arrested leni she puts it on, Gina. So basically both the sisters got arrested. Earlier Gina had a miscarriage. Leni swapped out with her so that Gina can be a mother to her beautiful daughter Mattie.

Since Floss fails to conclusively identify Leni and Gina separately, she gets forced to release the two sisters. Gina goes to see Victor on his death bed who revealed that he killed the sister’s mother. Leni arrived home and saw her dead father. Gina confronted Leni about Dylan’s murder. During this the house catches fire and they both tried to escape, Gina followed by Leni. After escaping from the burning house and Leni, Gina runs away to the nearby river. Leni met her and persuaded her not to run away. Then Gina jumped into a waterfall. Floss and the search party members assumed her to be dead. But they failed to identify that the dead one is Gina.

Echoes Ending, Explained:

As far as Gina is concerned, the only way she can live an independent life is by living far away from Leni. When Leni tried to disappear, the staff at the airport tells her that he met someone who exactly looked like her. That could be possibly Gina, as she wanted an escape from Floss. After suffering Leni’s “tyranny,” Dylan’s death, and another miscarriage, Gina will not want to spend the rest of her life in prison. So she wanted to live an independent life. Several days after Gina’s disappearance, Charlie publishes a book about the twin sisters, and a person in disguise, who looks like Gina/Leni, who appeared at a Q/A session and ask if Gina’s dead body was found. The person can be Gina, which further indicates that she is most likely alive.
Charlie arrived at his house to meet one of the twin sisters. And he asked her whether she is Gina or Leni. The person could be Leni, especially considering Charlie’s revelation to her that he loves her. Leni couldn’t return to Mount Echo since Floss will arrest her for several charges. Jack will only see her as a murderer of her own father. Leni also believes that her marriage with Jack is damaged beyond repair.

His feelings for her were the last hope for her bright future. And Since Charlie loves both Gina and Leni, he may welcome her into his life without bothering about finding out whether she is his wife or her sister. However, there is a possibility that the person is Gina. Charlie being Gina’s husband, willingly accepted Leni into his life knowingly the sisters swap their lives. If the woman is Gina, she must have returned to confront her husband for loving Leni and intentionally having a sexual relationship with him. The last words Victor told to Gina were that he killed Maria since she wanted it. As Maria was terminally ill with no chances of survival. She accepted death as she had no hope to cling to. She spent her days with Gina and Leni, in their garden, celebrating the arrival of the blossoms. She enjoyed the beauty of apple blossoms while eating the pain of her death.

Maria discussed with Victor and came to a conclusion that her death is the best choice she can make. After seeing Maria’s misery, Victor thought he should end her beloved misery even if it means he had to take her life. So he killed her by drowning Maria in the bathtub.
