According to reports, a British youngster who is missing in Tenerife called his friend in a state of desperation, claiming to be in "the middle of nowhere."

Jay Slater, 19, vanished late on Sunday night while attending a weekend festival in the Canary Islands with pals.

Along with two companions, the adolescent from Oswaldtwistle, Lancashire, had been to the New Rave Generation festival.

The three of them had attended the festival together, but later on, Jay decided to hang out with a bunch of people he had just met, so he broke up with his pals.

Later, on Monday, June 17, in the wee hours of the morning, he called a buddy, appearing confused and informing them that he was alone in the mountains.

Jay continued by saying he 'didn't know where he was' and that, at the time of the call, his phone was on 1%.

After failing to catch a bus, his buddy Lucy subsequently informed the Manchester Evening News that he had been making an effort to walk back to their lodging.

Since then, the last location has been determined to be the National Park of Teno, a well-liked hiking area on the island's northwest.

On Monday, the area's temperatures were said to have peaked at almost 26 degrees Celsius.

Explaining what she knew, Lucy said: "He's gone on a night out, he's gone to a friend's house, someone that he has met on holiday. One of the people he has met has hired a car out of here, so he's driven them back to his apartment and Jay has gone there not realising how far away it is.

"He's ended up out in the middle of nowhere. Jay was obviously thinking he would be able to get home from there."

She added: "But then in the morning he's set off walking, using his Maps on his phone and ended up in the middle of mountains with nothing around. He rang me at about 8 o'clock morning saying his phone was on one percent, he said 'I don't know where I am, I need a drink and my phone is about to die'."

Since then, a UK Foreign Office representative has confirmed that they are in contact with Tenerife local authorities over an ongoing issue involving a missing person.

"We are supporting the family of a British man who has been reported missing in Spain and are in contact with the local authorities," a statement read.

The Tenerife Civil Guard official continued, "Everything possible is being done to try to find the missing man."
