Andy Serkis Reveals He Almost Cracked His Ribs While Shooting For 'Black Panther'

One of the most memorable scenes from Black Panther is the Korean car chase. Although it was a really fun shot, it however, turned out to be quite dangerous for Andy Serkis.

The year is coming to an end and it has been quite an eventful one for Hollywood. We saw a lot of amazing superhero films by Marvel Studios that took the box office by storm. One such film was Black Panther that grossed $700,059,566. The superhero flick was released on January 29 and starred Chadwick Boseman as the lead character. One of the most memorable scenes from the film is the Korean car chase.

Although it was a really fun shot, it, however, turned out to be quite dangerous for Andy Serkis, who almost got injured while shooting the scene. According to Entertainment Weekly, Andy Serkis almost had a broken bone during the shooting because Boseman landed on his chest with a lot of force. Fortunately, Serkis avoided cracking his ribs.

Serkis revealed the behind the scenes information on People TV's show Couching Surfing. He said, "This chase ends up with T’Challa, Chad’s character… chasing me and catching me. It was a night shoot and the very first take he kneed me so hard in the chest, ’cause he couldn’t really see with his mask on. I felt like he had broken my ribs in the very first take."

Marvel Studios had a great run at the box office this year with Black Panther, becoming the highest grossing superhero film in the United States.

The actor-director recalled that he was jetlagged after flying from Atlanta to the sets and the shoot was happening over the night. The shot was taken more than 30 times with him sitting in a car that went flipping over and kept crashing. "I’m going to die. I thought I am literally going to die here," he said.

Serkis also praised a stunt where he had to fire a laser cannon at T'Challa, sending him backward spiraling through the floor on a gaming table.

"That was not a CG double. I’ll never forget that moment. The guy had a wire, wrapped around him several times, so he was like a spinning top. So when I fired at him, he literally backflipped right across the room and dropping 25 feet. I’ve never seen a stunt like it, or been that close to it.” he said. Although we don't know when the sequel to Black Panther will be announced but the director of the film Ryan Coogler shared his thoughts about it.

He said, "I think the pressure is kind of always going to be there. I’ve had a chance to make three feature films, each one of them had its own very specific type of pressure. In the process of it, it feels insurmountable each time. When it comes to making a sequel, I’ve never done it before, a sequel to something that I’ve directed myself. So I think there’s gonna be a lot of pressure there, but what we’re going to try to do is just focus on the work, like we always do."

"Really try to go step by step and try to quiet everything else around us, really focus on trying to make something that has some type of meaning,” he added. The film has been nominated for makeup, hairstyling, original score, original song, and visual effects. Black Panther was also nominated for Best Picture at this year's Golden Globe awards. The American superhero film is based on the character T'Challa, who is crowned the king of Wakanda.

After his father's death, he is challenged by an adversary who plans to abandon the country's isolationist policies and begin a global revolution. The film was going to be made in 1992 by Wesley Snipes but the project did not happen. The film was announced in October 2014 but Boseman's first appearance as Black Panther was in Captain America: Civil War. The Principal photography of Black Panther took place in EUE/Screen Gems studios.

Apart from Boseman and Serkis, the film also starred Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong'o, Danai Gurira, Martin Freeman, Daniel Kaluuya, Letitia Wright, Winston Duke, Angela Bassett, and Forest Whitaker. The fans are excited and are eagerly waiting for a sequel of the film. The first film got a really good response from the audience and the critics as well. We can only hope we get the news of the sequel soon!
