A Christmas Story has been a festive season staple for nearly three decades now. No Christmas is ever complete without A Christmas Story marathon and it has gained a special place in our hearts. Even though at the time of its release in 1983, it did not do so well, it went on to become a fan favorite eventually and a holiday season classic.
Now, after 39 years since the first movie came out, a sequel has been announced. The second installment is titled A Christmas Story Christmas.
The first movie, set in the 1940s, followed the story of a young boy named Ralphie as he attempts to convince his parents, his teacher, and Santa that a Red Ryder BB gun really is the perfect Christmas gift. The film is partly based on Jean Shepherd's semi-fictional anecdotes in his 1966 book, In God We Trust: All Others Pay Cash, along with some elements from his 1971 book, Wanda Hickey's Night of Golden Memories, and Other Disasters. Here's what you can expect in the sequel:
The sequel will follow an adult Ralphie, now in the 1970s. According to Deadline, he returns to the house on Cleveland Street to give his kids a magical Christmas like the one he had growing up. The new film will maintain the same attention to the real-life tone of the first, as Ralphie reconnects with childhood friends, comes to terms with the passing of his Old Man, and sows the seeds for the origins of the holiday classic.
The original Ralphie is coming back! Peter Billingsley is set to reprise his role and will also be producing the sequel along with Vince Vaughn under the Wild West Picture Show Productions banner. No other cast member has been confirmed yet but there is speculation that Julie Hagerty (Airplane!) will play Billingsley’s mother.
Billingsley moved from being a child actor to working behind the camera. He is the director of the comedy, Couples Retreat starring Vaughn. He has also executively produced The Break-Up and Four Christmases, and has produced the Broadway musical, A Christmas Story The Musical. It has received three Tony nominations including Best Musical.
Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment are developing the sequel. Clay Kaytis (The Christmas Chronicles) will be directing the script by Nick Schenk (Cry Macho, The Mule).
The production is set to start at the end of February in Bulgaria. The original film was shot in Cleveland and Toronto and the house where the film was shot has now become a tourist attraction. A release date has not yet been mentioned. But it will be premiering on HBO Max.
