Marvel’s ‘Agents of SHIELD’ was a huge success making its way to the top. The series has a total of seven seasons. However, the MCU’s flagship show might come to an end. Like our favorite character, Agent Coulson, the series itself has cheated death more than once. The most notable one was in season five. However, though the series had dodged death, it is finally ending in season seven. The decision came from the creators themselves. Let us find out more.
Is ‘Agents of SHIELD’ Coming Back For Season 8?
‘Agents of SHIELD’ will be saying goodbye after seven long seasons. So, the answer is no. Talking about the show’s finale with Deadline. Jeph Loeb, the producer of the show, explained why the series was cut short before season eight.
“How many shows do you know that just suddenly ended, and you feel like, but wait a minute, there was more. Yes, in the chronology of this is we thought season five was the end. If you go back and you look at the end of that season, it is written that way. Actually, the last episode of that season is called ‘The End.’“
“Honestly, we thought we were turning out the lights and going home when we got a call from ABC that said, the material is so strong, do you think you have another season, do you think you have another 13 because we sort of like this idea of doing it again,” the producer added.
The crew received a call from ABC’s Channing Dungey halfway through season six. Dungey asked if another season would follow after season six. “We all came to the conclusion that getting another season is so flattering, so lovely, so amazing, but how about if we go back and say, yes, but this is it,” said Loeb.
“So we can actually build a season that will tie up any threads that are there. To make sure that we come to a conclusion that’s satisfying to the fans, to the cast, to Marvel, and to ABC.”
The crew knew this may be the end. Loeb said this knowledge unchained the writers to take more chances in the series finale: “When you know that’s what you’re doing, you can take greater risks, of life and death. Those kinds of decisions suddenly now are real on the table because you’re not playing how do we undo this when we get to the next season. You’re playing that this is going to be the end of the story.”
The big question is, could the writers get tempted to create the eighth season? After all, this wasn’t the first time SHIELD cheated its end. However, when Deadline asked this question, Mr. Loeb confirmed that this is really the end.
“I personally believe that every great Marvel story ends to be continued, but the short answer is, yes, it will conclude in a way that is incredibly emotional and in the best ways.” Endings are hard to pull off, but Shield’s agent star Chloe Bennet assured fans that this wouldn’t be like Game of Thrones.
“I think fans will be very satisfied with the way that the show ends. There are a lot of endings. There are a lot of people on the show, and there are a lot of ways that it could go. This show has been kept alive by our fans. I think it’s safe to say that everyone was constantly thinking about how to make it more enjoyable, especially for the people who’ve been watching the show since season one.” (via Collider.)
Henry Simmons, the actor who portrayed Al Mckenzie, confirmed this to Collider in a different interview, saying that the payoff will be a big thing for fans:
“I think everyone will be happy,” he said. “There are gonna be some fans that still want more, and I hope that’s the case because you wanna leave people wanting more. “But the way it wraps up, I can’t say everyone’s gonna be satisfied because I don’t think everyone will be satisfied, but I think everyone will accept the reality of the situation. I’ll leave it at that.”
Whether fans accept the painful reality of the series’ ending or not, It will be possible that a spin-off can keep the story going after the last season. Moreover, the producers Jeph Loeb and Jeffrey Bell said in a recent interview the likelihood of this theory happening: “Is anything ever really over nowadays?” Loeb said Bell continues. (Deadline)
“Those issues are way above our pay grade, and so with the new Disney+ and with all the restructuring that Disney is doing with ABC and Marvel, those kinds of questions really are above what we have any say in.”
The crew behind SHIELD once tried to launch a spin-off but failed. Marvel’s Most Wanted, A pilot starring agents Lance Hunter and Bobbi Morse, was filmed by ABC. However, the network didn’t commit to a whole series. If ABC tries filming it again and makes a new spin-off, the potential contender would be Quake, as the fan-favorite has long been talked about starring in her show. But, The American actress Chloe Bennet denies that theory and said that she’s in the gloomy when it comes to potential spin-off plans:
“I wish that were true… but they aren’t… I haven’t heard anything about that besides on Twitter.” If a probable eight-season does not come to life. Then the future of the series might lie with some infrequent guest appearances by Agent Coulson instead. Whilst discussing the season finale, Clark Gregg announced that he may return to the MCU. “It’s hard for me to imagine a scenario where I’d say, ‘No, I’m too busy to put on whatever the latest version of the suit is and go play Phil Coulson.’ “I’m always thrilled when I see them changing timelines and exposing a multiverse in the cinematic [universe]. Because I think, ‘Well, I’ve seen scenarios where I could be around!’ So I really learned with this character to never say never, but I’m also really grateful for the ride that we had.”
Conclusion: Agents of SHIELD may have come to an end, but the show’s spirit is still in the shielded hands with Coulson. After all, he has been dead twice, and yet he always managed to come back.
