Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is a supernatural horror streaming series based on the Archie comic book series of the same name. It was developed by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa for Netflix. It was initially developed for The CW before it was picked up by the streamer. The show was supposed to be a companion show to Riverdale, which is also a darker, modern-day adaptation of the original characters from Archie Comics.
The show first premiered in 2018 and had a positive reception followed by a successful run. Kiernan Shipka plays the role of Sabrina Spellman, a half-witch, half-mortal who fights the evil forces that threaten her, her family, and the world of humans. As for the future of the show, here’s what you need to know:
Will There Be Season 5 of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina?
The first season of the show was released in three parts. The first 10 episodes were released on October 26, 2018. This was followed by one Christmas special episode and the remaining 10 episodes of the season were released on April 5, 2019. Before the second part of the first season was released, the show was renewed for a second season with 16 episodes. This too would be released in two parts. The first eight episodes were released on January 24, 2020, with the second set released on December 31, 2020. But in July 2020 the show was canceled. Netflix attributed its decision to the pandemic.
“Working on Chilling Adventures of Sabrina has been an incredible honor from Day One,” Aguirre-Sacasa told TVLine at the time of the news of the cancellation. “The cast, beginning with Kiernan as everyone’s favorite teen witch, has been an absolute joy. I am beyond thankful to the crew, writers, editors, assistants, and everyone for pouring so much love into this dark dream of a show. I’m also grateful to our partners at Netflix, Warner Bros., Berlanti Television, and Archie Comics for letting us tell the story we wanted to tell, the way we wanted to tell it. We can’t wait for everyone to see Part Four.”
Future Of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina
The show ended on a definitive note despite Aguirre-Sacasa’s attempt to leave it open-ended, keeping in mind the possibility of renewal. But after the cancelation was announced, Sabrina appeared in the sixth season of Riverdale, in a much-anticipated crossover. Sabrina helps Cheryl Blossom with a spell in “Chapter Ninety-Nine: The Witching Hour(s).” Aguirre-Sacasa said of the crossover, “We’ve been talking about having Sabrina visit Riverdale since season 1, so it’s thrilling that this is finally happening as part of our Rivervale special event. It’s also perfect that she shows up to help Cheryl Blossom during her hour of greatest need. Everyone on set lost their minds — I think fans will, too. It’s really fun and special.”
Additionally, the world of Sabrina is not over just yet. “I reached out to [Archie Comics CEO/publisher] Jon Goldwater and told him that Sabrina is going to eventually come back,” Aguirre-Sacasa said in an interview with Deadline. “We’re going to find a way to continue with Kiernan, but in the meantime, what if we bring back the comic book?” He announced that the prospective fifth part and third season would be published as the comic book sequel series The Occult World of Sabrina. We may just be reunited with Sabrina onscreen as well sometime in the future.
