X-Men: Dark Phoenix Said To Be Just As Bad As The Fantastic Four Reboot. Is it real? When you look back at it, it kind of does make sense why the film was going through a bit of development hell with Fox having to reshoot pretty much all of Dark Phoenix as well as several delays.
Yup, your eyes didn’t deceive you and your mouth didn’t fumble when reading the title - it does indeed say “Bad As The Fantastic Four Reboot.”
Ay Yi Yi!
God help us if that is what we’re going to be getting in less than a month from now.
When you look back at it, it kind of does make sense why the film was going through a bit of development hell with Fox having to reshoot pretty much all of Dark Phoenix as well as several delays.
But the real heart of the matter stems in the film’s test or pre-premiere screening. According to Skyler Shuler, who is The DisInsider’s editor-in-chief and the writer for That Hashtag Show, Fox decided to hold a test screening for the film back in the first few days of January of this year, to which Shuler responded on his Twitter account with:
“Based on what I have heard, this movie could be Fant4stic level BAD.”
And we all remember Fant4stic right? Or do we even want to revisit that heinous creative nightmare from those many years ago? A rhetorical question obviously, but still.
Then towards the end of January, Fox held another screen test for the film and was met with typically the same outcome as Shuler said on his Twitter account:
“Another X-Men: Dark Phoenix test screening, and guess what? I now have talked to 6 people who all went to 3 different test screenings and all of them have told me the screenings were BAD.”
Now we might be getting a little ahead of ourselves hanging the words of just one person instead of taking it with a pinch of salt, but one fan seems to share a similar sentiment as they responded to that tweet with the following:
“I went to one of the screenings. Everybody LAUGHED SO HARD in a scene supposed to be so serious. What a way to end Fox/Marvel movies.” Shuler followed that up by responding “I think I know what scene you're referring to” along with a Spongebob GIF where the character buries himself completely under the sand.
Sadly, this is not an isolated incident and it wasn’t the only time Fox held test screenings for Dark Phoenix that were horribly received as the one was held sometime back even before March 2018, if you can believe that. This was when Collider reported that Simon Kinberg, who serves as the film’s writer and director wanted to get feedback from the test audiences "to see what was working and what wasn't,” and the response, unfortunately, forced the studio’s hand to push its release date back and order extra photography.
Normally, a film going through reshoots does not necessarily indicate that a film is bad. However, ScreenRant reported that Dark Phoenix underwent a wave of reshoots in response to test screenings that were largely criticized. This is also backed by Metro UK’s report back in September 2018, when the film had to undergo reshoots due to "devastating test screening reactions."
So as you can see, there is a pattern in the reports, and if that is the case, then Dark Phoenix may face a Fant4stic type of backlash.
