Willem Dafoe Reportedly Spotted As Green Goblin On Set Of 'Spider-Man 3'

Dafoe played Norman Osborn, also known as the Green Goblin, in 2002’s 'Spider-Man'.

Speculations of Willem Dafoe returning to the Spider-Man universe have been making rounds again. GWW reported that trusted sources had seen the 65-year-old actor on set as Green Goblin on February 5. In December, The Illuminerdi reported that Dafoe and Thomas Hayden Church were coming back to the franchise. Church played Flint Marko, the Sandman, in Spider-Man 3 (2008) while Dafoe played Norman Osborn (also known as the Green Goblin) in 2002’s Spider-Man.

We previously mentioned that Dane DeHaan who originally played Spider-Man's nemesis in the 2014 movie 'The Amazing Spider-Man 2' will not be returning. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was directed by Marc Webb and starred Andrew Garfield in the lead. Talking to RadioTimes for his crime drama television show ZeroZeroZero, he said although he'd love to do a movie like The Amazing Spider-Man 2 again, it's not happening.

“There’s no truth to those rumors. I don’t even know how that would be pulled off. I would certainly love to make some kind of movie like that again. I like making superhero movies or in that kind of world and I’m sure I’ll find myself in that world again. And I have no idea what they’re doing with the Spider-Man movies now, but I don’t really understand a world in which that would be possible,” he said.

As for the rest of the cast, Jamie Foxx would be reprising his role as Electro and Alfred Molina will be back as Doctor Octopus. Speaking with ComicBook, Marvel boss Kevin Feige addressed some of the rumored returns for Spider-Man 3, "I’ve read some things. I’m not sure I’ve read all things. The fun thing about online speculation when it comes to our stuff is how sometimes it couldn’t be more off the mark and sometimes it’s shockingly close, and that’s held true for the last few years. But saying which is which would take all the fun out of everything."

"The biggest clue is the title of the second Doctor Strange movie. That’s the biggest clue of where the Multiverse of Madness is taking us and how we’re exploring that. It’s surreal to me that we’re talking about a Spider-Man 3. I worked on a movie called Spider-Man 3 many years ago directed by Mr. Sam Raimi. So this clearly, the shorthand of calling it Spider-Man 3 now, it’s fine. We call it Homecoming 3." MCU’s Spider-Man franchise will soon see Tom Holland play the superhero yet again for the third time. As for the rest of the cast, we'll have to wait and see if the rumors are indeed true!

Spider-Man 3 is currently scheduled for release on December 17, 2021.
