The series has been praised for its emotional storytelling and attention to diversity.
This Is Us is the NBC drama series that first started airing on September 20, 2016. The series follows the story of parents, Jack and Rebecca Pearson, and their three children, Kevin, Kate, and Randall aka the Big Three, in several different time frames throughout their lives. The series has been a big hit and praised for its emotional storytelling and attention to diversity.
The series was renewed for two seasons of 18 episodes each in 2017 and then again for three more seasons in 2019. The latest season of the show premiered on January 4, 2022. Here's what's in store for the future of This Is Us:
The fifth season of the show premiered in 2021 and was followed by the announcement that the sixth season would be the last one. The sixth season ended on May 24, 2022. “From day one, Dan came in with his master plan for the big picture stuff of the show and said, ‘I think this is where we end up. I think this is what I know. Let’s figure out the rest together,’" Isaac Aptaker said of Dan Fogelman who are both the showrunners. "So all of the writers and the actors really know everything. We’re all pretty good at keeping secrets by now, it’s been three years, but it’s a total open book for everyone who works on the show, so there are no secrets from each other.”
Frances Berwick, chairman of entertainment networks at NBCU Television and Streaming stated, “We know saying goodbye to the Pearsons will be hard enough, and we wanted to give fans as close to an uninterrupted run as we can.” Aptaker added, "I would hope that when we reach our ending, people think it’s a really satisfying end place, that makes sense, and it feels like they’ve watched something that is a complete piece of work because that’s really how we’re trying to plan it." So as heartbreaking as it is for the fans, the show will not be coming back for another season.
The show features a wide array of actors including Milo Ventimiglia, Mandy Moore, Sterling K. Brown, Chrissy Metz, Justin Hartley, Jon Huertas, and Ron Cephas Jones, among several others playing various characters who have left an impression on the audience. It would not be far-fetched to have them star in their own spin-off shows. Unfortunately, most likely, there will not be a spin-off as far as Fogleman is concerned.
"Once you've seen the completion of season six, the stories of these characters are told," he explained to Variety. "So there is no real spin-off because you kind of know everything." But he also added, "I guess you'd never say never, but I don't see it. It's personal to me, and I don't see myself picking this thing back up." The world of the Pearsons has officially come to an end.
